Across the room,
Inside the banquet hall, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew were cheerfully conversing with Cassius.
Now, as the CEO of Chambers Group, Matthew had taken over several significant industries and subsidiaries, and as the eldest son favored by his father, it was almost certain that he would control the entire Chambers Group in the future.
Cassius, as the eldest son of Emeric, was also undoubtedly the future heir to the K Group. Thus, even though Matthew disapproved of the polygamous and impartial Ashbourne family, he was still willing to play nice with Cassius.
"President Ashbourne, heard that the K Group is making significant moves in Elmsworth. Your momentum is quite impressive," Matthew spoke with a successful businessman's smile, "Our families go way back, and our fathers are like brothers. I hope we can continue this relationship into our generation."
Cassius smiled lightly and clinked glasses with him.
"Remember to keep Chambers Group in mind if K Group has any good projects in Elmsworth. If our families unite, we'll be unstoppable in Elmsworth, or even the whole country." Matthew took a sip of his wine, revealing his ambitions.
"Mr. Chambers, I appreciate your perspective, but it's unfortunate that I'm planning to step back soon." Cassius replied, his eyes calm, sipping his wine elegantly.
Matthew and his wife, Elva, exchanged puzzled glances, "President Ashbourne, are you saying?"
"Everyone knows being a CEO was never my aspiration. I only took the position to help my father, to allow my siblings to pursue their dreams without being burdened by family affairs." Cassius thought of Evadne, and his lips curved up gently, "Now, my baby sister is back. She's interested in business, eager to manage the group, and is highly capable. So once this transition phase is over, I will step back and leave the position to my sister."
Matthew looked stunned, "President Ashbourne, are you suggesting that Chairman Emeric plans to let Miss Evadne become the CEO of the K Group?"
"Yes." Cassius nodded, straightforwardly.
It was no secret that Evadne would be the group's future heir.
Looking at the entire Ashbourne family, no one was more suitable than her.
"But Miss Evadne is a girl, and she's only in her early twenties. She should be enjoying her youth. In a few years, she'll get married and should focus on her family, support her husband. Isn’t that the typical life of a wealthy heiress?"
Elva added gently, "Moreover, Chairman Emeric has several talented sons, any of whom could take over. Is it necessary for Miss Evadne to take on such a burden? It's a lot of stress for a young girl."
"I understand your concern, Mrs. Chambers, but Evadne is not an ordinary girl. If you ask her to focus on her family and not pursue her personal ambitions, she might flee abroad again and only come back when I'm on my deathbed." Cassius joked, "So even if it's just to keep her by my side, I have to give up my position. Whatever she wants, as long as it's within my power, I will give it to her."
Elva was taken aback!
The Chambers family had four children, three of whom were born from the same mother, yet they were always at each other's throats.
Emeric had three wives and numerous children, yet instead of seeking more benefits for themselves, they were willing to give up what they had worked so hard for!
Unbelievable! Incomprehensible!
Matthew praised Cassius verbally, but in his heart, he sneered at Cassius' lack of ambition and blind indulgence of his sister. He even gave up his bright future for her.
"Mr. Chambers!"
At that moment, Matthew's secretary hurried over. Seeing Elva present, he hesitated to speak.
"Excuse me for a moment." Matthew apologized with a smile.
Cassius nodded, "Please."
As soon as Matthew left, Elva's expression darkened.
"What did you say?" Matthew frowned after hearing the report.
"Mia is here, but she couldn't get in. She was stopped by the Ashbourne family's people. She's making a scene outside, wanting to see you. Many people have seen it!" The secretary wiped his sweat and reported in a low voice.
"Can she even be here on such an occasion? Tell her to leave."
"Mr. Chambers, there was a commotion outside. Apparently, Mia insulted Miss Nydia of the Ashbourne family, and it even alarmed Miss Evadne." The secretary swallowed nervously, "From what I can tell, Miss Evadne won't let this go easily unless you intervene."
Matthew clenched his jaw and adjusted his tie, "Understood."
Evadne wanted to deal with Mia right there and then.
But Nydia was afraid that if this got out of hand, it would reach their parents' ears, so she begged her sister to handle it privately.
Now, in the empty banquet hall.
Mia stood in sheer terror, the two towering bodyguards standing ominously behind her, their dark suits lending an oppressive air. Her previously arrogant demeanor had vanished without a trace.
Evadne was languidly sprawled on the sofa, her elegant legs crossed lazily, her sister, Nydia, at her side. Jason was standing nearby, serving them a platter of assorted fruits.
Feeding a piece to her sister, Evadne looked utterly contented, her eyes sparkling mischievously, reminiscent of a playful hedonist.
"Jason was telling me the other day that this woman had insulted you, and quite badly at that." Evadne asked, her voice neither loud nor soft, her tone unreadable.
Upon hearing this, Mia felt a chilly shiver run down her spine, as if she'd been plunged into an icy cellar.
Evadne, a woman, exuded an oppressive aura so strong it was terrifying.
"Evadne, let me handle this. It's a personal grudge between us," Nydia interjected, her heart pounding in her chest.
This woman was an insult to her sister, and she didn't want Evadne involved in this mess.
"Sweet sister, I know you don't want to trouble me," Evadne responded, her voice soft as she stroked Nydia's silky hair, her words chillingly cold. "It warms my heart that you consider my feelings. I'll take care of this matter for you, and you won't have to feel guilty. Consider it a lesson from me. Now you'll know what to do when you meet someone who doesn't know their place."
Mia's heart pounded in her chest, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Now, her only hope was for Mr. Chambers to come and save her.
Suddenly, the banquet hall doors swung open.
Matthew entered, his icy gaze following his secretary.
Jason's eyes darkened at the sight of the man, a reminder of the humiliation he'd suffered before.
"Mr. Chambers, Mr. Chambers!" Mia cried out, tears welling up in her eyes, her perfectly done makeup beginning to smudge. "Mr. Chambers! Please, you have to help me! I've been framed!"
Matthew's expression hardened, his lips pursed. He had a reputation for his promiscuous lifestyle, and Mia was just another one-night stand he'd picked up at a high-end club belonging to the Chambers Group two months ago.
In his eyes, she was like junk food, filling but lacking in substance. Once he'd had his fill, he was done with her.
But now, she'd followed him here, causing a scene and dragging him into it.
