Thaddeus retreated to his study, waiting for Gordon's arrival.
He contemplated the words the young maid had whispered to him. Standing by the window and smoking, his gaze was deep and mysterious, yet his heart was pounding.
So, she had private contact with Evadne, and they were in constant touch?
Why?
Evadne, what were you trying to do? Why did you always make me uneasy?
A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Thaddeus called out in response, took a deep drag on his cigarette, and flicked the ashes with his calloused fingers.
The door opened, and Gordon entered briskly, then he closed the door behind him. He handed Thaddeus a note with both hands.
"Mr. Thaddeus, this is the address Erica asked me to give you. She will be there tonight, meeting with Ms. Evadne."
Thaddeus felt his heart tighten, and the fingertips holding the cigarette trembling slightly.
He turned to take the note, glanced at it, and memorized the address.
"What else did the maid tell you?"
Gordon shook his head. "Mr. Thaddeus, I have a feeling that she might be a spy planted by Ms. Evadne in the Abernathy family."
"No need for your feelings; she definitely is." Thaddeus' voice was slightly husky as he clenched the note in his hand.
Evadne, always orchestrated things under his nose, manipulating events without him realizing.
"What does Ms. Evadne want?"
Gordon suddenly brightened. "Hey! Could it be that Ms. Evadne still has feelings for you, so she left a spy in the Abernathy family to keep an eye on your every move?! If that's the case, Mrs. Abernathy still has you in her heart, Mr. Thaddeus! That's a great news!"
Thaddeus gave him a stern look, even the smoke he exhaled seemed filled with resignation.
He wasn't conceited enough to believe that Evadne was doing all this because she still had feelings for him. The Ashbourne family's heiress was ambitious and busy, she wouldn't have the time for such things.
There was only one possibility.
There was something in the Abernathy family that Evadne couldn’t rest easy about, something that required her close attention.
Was it for Myra? Was she still plotting revenge against Elspeth?
If so, why did Erica reveal their plot to him today? They could have kept it private!
Did they want him to help them?
Thaddeus' gaze turned red, as if his frozen heart was reinvigorated. A strong sense of protection surged within him.
"Mr. Thaddeus, do you want me to accompany you tonight?" Gordon asked with concern.
Thaddeus took a deep breath and shook his head slightly. "No, Erica only invited me. That means they don't want others to know their secret."
Gordon couldn't help but worry for him. "But Mr. Thaddeus, does Mrs. Abernathy know that you're going over? If it’s just Erica's idea, won't Mrs. Abernathy might get angry when she sees you."
"In that case, I'll just secretly follow her, keeping a safe distance."
Thaddeus' stern gaze softened when he thought of Evadne. "She's a constant source of mischief. I can't keep my eyes off her."
At exactly nine o’clock in the evening, Glynnis, dressed in black and wore a baseball cap, left the Windermere Estate through the back door.
As soon as she got into a cab and left, a black car slowly emerged from the darkness.
"Ms. Glynnis, should we follow?"
The driver was one of Elspeth's trusted aides, also serving as her personal assistant. Over the years, he had been helping them with various tasks. Tonight, he was assigned to assist Glynnis.
"No need to tail her. Tonight, this traitor, who eats from our plate and betrays us, must meet her demise. If we follow too closely, it might cause trouble if some unlucky CCTV captures us." Glynnis had learned a lot from Elspeth when it came to mischief.
"Yes, Ms. Glynnis. I'll wait for Madam's instructions. When the time is right, I'll take action" Mr. Ward responded mechanically, showing no emotions as he spoke.
"How do you plan to handle it?"
Glynnis raised her eyebrows, asking with a lazy tone, "Is my mother intending to make her disappear for some days, or to make her disappear forever?"
"Madam's intention is to eliminate any further trouble." Mr. Ward responded expressionlessly.
"Huh, that's quite ruthless."
"If Madam wasn't ruthless, how could you have such a luxurious and pampered life, Miss Glynnis?"
"Humph, even if my mother did nothing, my life wouldn't change at all."
Mr. Ward glanced at her through the rearview mirror with a hint of mockery in his eyes. "Are you sure, Ms. Glynnis?"
Glynnis pursed her lips, feeling greatly resentful.
Elspeth schemed so hard because her position at that time required her to do so; otherwise, she would forever be a kept woman unable to ascend the social hierarchy.
But Glynnis was different. No matter what happened, even if she did nothing, she was still Frederic's daughter, the true heiress of the Abernathy family!
Elspeth always called her foolish, and she was fed up with that word! She was sick of hearing it!
This time, she wanted to make a statement, to create some commotion, to show Elspeth what she was capable of.
If Elspeth could scheme, she could do it even better!
"Mr. Ward, I have an idea that could trap all those who want to harm mom and me." Glynnis leaned in, her tone carrying a hint of maliciousness.
Mr. Ward looked at her solemnly. "What's your idea?"
"Instead of stopping Erica meeting that guy, why don’t we just let her go ahead? Then we can catch them all at once? Wouldn't that be satisfying?"
Glynnis grinned wickedly. "And I'm a hundred percent sure she is Evadne's spy planted among us. Thaddeus, with his arrogant demeanor, probably wouldn't be stoop to such actions. And if she was his person, there’s no need for her to take such risks and slip out in the middle of the night?"
Mr. Ward nodded, "So, Ms. Glynnis, are you suggesting that I eliminate Evadne?"
Eliminate Evadne?
Glynnis’ heart raced, a mix of nervousness, fear and excitement!
She had dreamed of dragging Evadne out and feeding her to the dogs!
But that was Evadne, the heiress of the wealthiest man in Skyrim. If Glynnis really killed her, Emeric would undoubtedly devote all his resources to find the murderer and avenge his daughter. She would bear enormous risks and endless consequences.
However, tonight she had a golden opportunity. Evadne was meeting with Erica secretly, so she wouldn’t bring many people with her.
"Do you dare?" Glynnis asked tentatively, her gaze dark and probing.
"I don't mind. I've done this sort of thing before." Mr. Ward, a former mercenary, was a born killer. Evadne didn’t mean much to him.
Glynnis' eyes sparkled with a cold light, and she laughed, "As long as you can do it, tonight will be Evadne's last night on earth!"
Evadne and Jason waited in a park in the west district, where no one was around.
After all, with her current status, she would attract a lot of attention in crowded places, which could bring trouble to Erica, who was acting as their informant.
Jason kept checking his watch, feeling a bit nervous during waiting. "Why hasn’t she come yet? Could something have gone wrong?"
Evadne furrowed her brows, equally concerned.
"Miss, did Erica suddenly arrange to meet you because she has obtained some significant information about Elspeth?"
"Everything will be clear when Erica arrives."
Soon, hurried footsteps approached from a distant.
"Ms. Evadne! Run!"
Erica rushed to them in a panic, her face and sweat pouring down her back, "I'm being followed! They've traced me here! Ms. Evadne, run!"
Evadne quickly reached out to support the frightened Erica with both hands, her gaze burning with determination. "Don't be afraid. I won't let anyone hurt you."
Before she could finish, a sinister string of footsteps had reached them.
