The atmosphere suddenly felt oddly charged.
Evadne stared blankly at Thaddeus' handsome face; his present smile was a gentle radiance she had never seen before.
She cleared her throat softly, quickly averting her gaze, unwilling to meet his sparkling eyes. As if one more glance would reveal some unspeakable secret.
She realized he had changed a lot.
In the past, Thaddeus was cold as ice, like a chilling abyss.
Now he was as if he had transformed into a warm spring surrounding her, giving her a sense of safety.
“Ahem, well.”
A born bachelor Aaron couldn't stand the romantic atmosphere and broke it, "It's just a suit. Why wash it? Our Ashbourne family is wealthy enough to afford replacing a piece of clothing. Evadne, just buy Mr. Abernathy a new one. I will cover the cost!”
“Thanks, Captain Ashbourne.” Thaddeus' lips curled up slightly, his face calm.
“Aaron, are you sure you want to buy it?”
Evadne's mood relaxed a bit, her eyebrows raised slightly, “If I am not mistaken, Mr. Abernathy's suit is a high-end custom made from a well-known brand that serves the royal family. It's not something that money can easily buy. Even if it was available, I suspect your annual salary, Aaron, would only cover the cost of one of Mr. Abernathy's sleeves.”
Damn! Cost that much?!
Aaron's face instantly went sour. He didn't care about losing face in front of his sister; he blurted out, “I take it back! Forget about what I just said!”
Anyway, he wouldn’t feel embarrassed in front of his own sister who he had witnessed growing up.
Thaddeus' smile deepened at the corners of his mouth, his gentle gaze deeply fixed on the young woman, “No wonder you're a genius designer, Haron. Your eye for quality is truly unique.”
Evadne was taken aback, her eyes meeting his, "When did you find out?"
“I guessed it at Myra's birthday party, when Myra appeared in a stunning black evening gown. No, in fact, I should have guessed it the first time I saw you handling clothes in Ms. Eunice's studio.” Thaddeus confessed fondly.
Evadne bit her crimson lips, tears creeping into her eyes.
At the moment, a mix of emotions welled up in her heart, intertwining into something indescribable.
Thaddeus suddenly remembered the suit that he still carefully kept in his closet, now worn and tattered. It was the suit that Evadne, once his wife, had sewn for him with painstaking care day and night.
Each stitch, each thread, was filled with love.
But such treatment, such affection, Thaddeus might never receive again.
He should have known then, he should have understood then, how exceptional, how perfect, how flawless his woman was.
But at that time, he was blind and saw nothing.
The sight of Evadne's sorrowful expression hit him hard, making his already shattered heart even more fragile.
He owed her too much.
Even if he spent a lifetime making up for it, he wasn't sure if he could ever compensate her fully.
“Evadne, does Erica's phone contain some important evidence? You seem so desperate to repair it.” Aaron asked curiously.
Evadne nodded with a sorrowful expression, “Before she passed away, she whispered in my ear that she had crucial evidence of Elspeth's wrongdoings on her phone. This was her last message to me.”
At her words, they all bowed their heads in silence.
The poor girl, in her last moments, didn't think of her own life or death. Instead, she thought about how she could tear a hole through the darkness of evil, to let the light of justice shine through.
“So. Erica's death must also be related to this secret she knew.” Aaron pondered with a frown.
“Yes. Otherwise, the cunning and careful Elspeth wouldn't have suddenly lost her cool, recklessly sending a hitman to kill Erica. She wanted to silence her.” Evadne clenched her fists with anger, a flush of fury rising in her eyes.
“To think she dared to target you!”
Aaron was fuming at the thought of Evadne's encounter that night, he slammed the table, “You have five brothers, a wealthy and powerful father, and she dared to lay a finger on you?! Without our dad stepping in, any one of us could make her wish she was never born!”
Thaddeus' eyes, as deep as a tranquil lake, rippled with a cold wave.
What on earth happened to drive Elspeth to such desperate measures!
Evadne bit her crimson lip, her face as cold as the moon, “Trying to silence Erica was Elspeth's idea, no doubt. But the attempt on my life might not have been Elspeth's doing. From what I see, it's highly likely that Glynnis falsely conveyed orders, or wanted to take a shot at me herself. After all, considering Elspeth's cunning and strategy, she wouldn't act so rashly. This seems more like Glynnis' handiwork.”
That made sense.
Thaddeus couldn't help but nod slightly in agreement.
“Damn, isn't Glynnis Elspeth's daughter? Well, well, mother and daughter conspiring together, they can look forward to a family reunion in prison!” Aaron cursed, wishing he could tear the heads off that mother-daughter duo!
Evadne took a deep breath, her heavy gaze falling on Thaddeus.
- "Elspeth killed Cynthia. The evidence's in my phone.”
Thaddeus was stunned by her intensely burning gaze, somewhat puzzled.
Evadne unlocked Erica's phone, and scrolled through the entire gallery, finding nothing unusual.
Considering it was evidence, she thought it might be a recording, so she opened the recording app.
Sure enough, there lay a recording.
Evadne's long lashes fluttered, her fingertip hot as she played the recording.
The recording quality wasn't great. It was a bit faint, and muffled, as if it was recorded in a closed environment.
But the room was incredibly quiet. The three of them held their breath; even a pin dropping would be audible.
And thus, the conversation between Elspeth and Glynnis was heard loud and clear.
- "Mom! You should really keep your distance from that Victor. He surely has an ulterior motive! As for Cynthia's death, that secret must follow everyone who knows it to their graves! As long as he is alive, he's a lethal threat to you!"
Thaddeus' pupils contracted sharply!
Cynthia?!
- "No way, it's been almost twenty years, all evidence is gone! Unless Cynthia, that wretched woman, comes back from the dead to accuse me, no one knows what really happened to her!"
Before he could finish his sentence, he rushed towards the door!
"Thaddeus! Calm down, calm down!"
In desperation, Evadne used all her strength, her arms wrapped around him from behind, holding his tensed waist tightly.
"Thaddeus! Evadne is right!"
Aaron also stepped forward to block his way, looking intently at his pale face, the sadness in his eyes making even him, an onlooker, feel heartbroken, "Murder is punishable by death. Why should you, a decent man, pay with your life for these evil beasts?! If you really want to avenge your mother, you need to stay rational, stay clear-headed! Elspeth deserves to die, but if you do it, it's a life for a life! Is it worth it for such a venomous woman?! What if something happens to you, what about Evadne?! Have you thought about that?!"
Aaron said a lot, but it seemed that only the last two sentences, like a potent tranquilizer, stabbed into his aching heart.
Evadne, almost using all her strength, held him from behind, her sweat-soaked face pressed against his back, not moving.
She could even clearly feel his ragged breathing gradually became even, and his strong heartbeat gradually calmed down.
But even so, she didn't dare to relax.
She understood him, and she sympathized with him.
If it were her own mother, her reaction would probably be more terrifying.
After an unknown amount of time, Thaddeus finally seemed to regain his shattered soul; his cold, damp hand gently covered her red one, his voice trembling and hoarse, "Evadne, I'm sorry. I scared you just now."
A sting in Evadne's heart, she shook her head with her eyes closed.
This man, sometimes he was so silly it was heartbreaking.
He was still apologizing at such a time. What was he wrong about?
He was clearly the most miserable person in the world at this moment.
"But, Evadne, what should I do?"
Tears relentlessly streamed down from Thaddeus' numb, pain-stricken eyes. His towering figure stood frozen, feeling as if his heart had been ripped out and cast into a bottomless pit of icy despair.
"How could I have been so stupid. The one who murdered my mom has been right under my nose, living with me for twenty years, and I was completely oblivious. Evadne, tell me, other than killing her, what should I do? How should I avenge my mom and bring her justice?"
"Hang in there, it's almost over."
Evadne's gentle hand soothingly stroked his trembling back, her voice as soft as a lullaby, easing the pain of his heart torn apart by hate, "I feel the same way. I also yearn for Elspeth and Glynnis to pay for their sins in blood and agony. I'm with you, Thaddeus. I'll do everything I can to stand by your side and complete this dance of revenge. On this path, I'm ready to face the unknown dangers with you. We'll be okay. Together, we'll watch those evil doers plummet into hell, never to reincarnate."
Thaddeus closed his tear-filled eyes, gripping her hand tightly.
I do.
It wasn't a vow before the Almighty, but it was more heartfelt than any oath, sweeter than all the honeyed words in the world.
They were finally together, not for the sake of love, but for revenge.
Even so, Thaddeus was immensely content.
Mom, if you're watching over me from heaven, please, bless me this once.
