The king's orders were issued, and Ward's dream of surviving in Country T was shattered.
Moreover, it seemed that the royal family wanted to use this as a spark to gain more power from the military, weaken its strength, and deal a severe blow to the underworld.
This was essentially a contest between the royal family and the military, with undercurrents raging beneath the surface.
Otherwise, Ward, a mere pawn, would not have warranted such a fuss.
These were the details Debby shared with Evadne afterwards. However, the young lady was smart and quick-witted, she had already figured it out herself.
What concerned her more was a name, Eden, the military officer that Leonard had snitched on.
This matter seemed suspicious and very bizarre.
But she didn't have time to think about that now. All she could think about was when Thaddeus would be out of danger and wake up from his coma.
Ward was temporarily locked up in jail waiting to be deported, and on Elmsworth's end, Aaron had already spoken to his superiors. He took a night flight with his men to Country T to pick up their man.
In the early hours of the morning.
Everyone was in the hospital corridor, but the air was eerily quiet and chilly.
Jareth and Elvis were constantly on the phone.
One was communicating with Aaron, who was on his way, and the other was reassuring Lily at home, occasionally glancing at the video call to see his adorable wife's sleeping face.
Jareth stared at Marilla on the screen, the overwhelming longing made his eyes well up with tears.
With his eyes red, he gently touched his wife's face on the screen, closed his eyes, and couldn't help but lean in for a kiss.
"Wow, kissing your phone screen? That's cheesy," Elvis suddenly leaned in, startling Jareth who quickly ended the video call, afraid to wake his sleeping wife.
"No. What's wrong with you? Why do you have to comment on everything I do!"
"Why wouldn't I? You're a walking target for mockery!"
Elvis stuck his finger in his ear, "If everyone was as annoying in love as you, I'd rather stay single for life."
"With your toxic remarks, you're better off single. Any woman willing to put up with you would probably develop breast hyperplasia or uterine fibroids!" Jareth retorted angrily.
"You want to keep going?"
Elvis raised an eyebrow, "Keep going, and I'll tell your girlfriend about how you chased my sister and how desperate you were. Let her get angry at you and have you kneel on durians when you get home, hahaha!"
Damn it! What a jerk!
Jareth clenched his fists in rage, but he didn't dare to retort.
He wasn't afraid of anything except his wife getting really angry!
"I don't understand, aside from being clueless about romance, Thaddeus is normally a proud and cunning guy. How did he get so close to you?"
The words "idiot" almost slipped out of Elvis' mouth.
"Hey! If it wasn't for me, Thaddeus' journey would have been even lonelier and harder!"
Ignoring his mockery, Jareth's eyes were filled with concern for Thaddeus, "Do you think Thaddeus really doesn't like making friends? He just can't make any!"
Elvis took a drag from his cigarette, genuinely curious, "Why? Does Thaddeus have some psychological issues?"
"Dude, do you have any manners?" Jareth glared at him angrily.
"If he doesn't have any major issues, why did he reject my sister back then and choose to be with that girl who cuckolded him?"
After everything they've been through, Elvis had let go of his grudge against Thaddeus.
But his family had a longstanding tradition of holding grudges and digging up the past.
Every time he thought of this, he couldn't help but want to take a jab at Thaddeus, forgetting that the guy was still in there, fighting for his life.
"Because of his background, Thaddeus was bullied by his classmates. He would hide his wounds so as not to worry his mother, always bringing her good news and never the bad."
"Damn! I hate bullying! Some kids aren't human, they're demon spawn!"
Elvis crushed his pack of cigarettes in anger, "Was Thaddeus that weak? Couldn't he fight back?!
The young master of the Abernathy family getting beaten up? He should have rammed them with his Rolls-Royce!"
"You can handle one or two people, but what if one day, you become the target of everyone's bullying?" Jareth asked, his eyes red with pain.
Elvis' eyes narrowed, and he clenched his fists.
"Elvis, you're the legitimate son of Chairman Emeric, born to his beloved wife. You've been pampered since childhood. Even me, I grew up in a simple family environment. My parents loved each other and doted on me. We've never experienced the pain of Thaddeus' awkward status, nor the pressure of treading on thin ice in a complex family."
Elvis fell into deep thought.
Indeed, Thaddeus was not born to the legitimate wife. He had a half-brother, who was the eldest son. Then Frederic married the ruthless Elspeth. Thaddeus' life in the Abernathy family was probably bitter beyond words.
"So, Thaddeus has not had any friends over the years apart from me. He has a natural psychological resistance to making friends, what we call a hardened heart. Besides, he's used to being alone, so it doesn't matter if there's no one around."
Nobody truly enjoyed being alone.
Most of the time, there's just no other choice.
"I take back what I said earlier." Elvis suddenly said.
"What?"
"The upbringing in your family, the Fairhavens, isn't bad. At least you didn't follow the crowd. You didn't join in when everyone was bullying one person."
Jareth's thoughts abruptly turned to Edith Fairhaven, the chaos she brought upon her return, and the monstrous way she bullied Marilla, an image that made him shudder.
He chuckled bitterly. He had evidently failed as an elder brother, leading his sister astray.
"You know, you may look clueless, but you're sharp as a tack."
Elvis passed by him, patting his shoulder with a heavy hand, "From now on, Thad will have more than just you as a friend."
Jareth's heart skipped a beat as he swiftly turned around.
But Elvis had already disappeared in the distance, like a gust of cool wind.
Meanwhile, in the corridor outside the emergency room.
Cassius and Debby had been accompanying Evadne, anxiously waiting for Chasel's surgery to end.
"Sweetie, it’s a big surgery. It might take until morning. Why don't you find a room to rest?" Debby hugged Evadne, feeling her cold body and slightly trembling hands, worried she would exhaust herself.
"I'm fine, I'll just wait here."
Evadne blinked her lashes, "How could I possibly sleep at this moment."
"Evadne."
Cassius sat next to her, asking seriously, "What do you think about Eden the General mentioned?"
Debby complained, "Cassius, give Evadne a break. Can't we talk about this tomorrow? Besides, I'll urge the authorities along with my husband to investigate this case. We won't let you be bullied unjustly."
