Windermere Estate.
At this moment, the entire Abernathy family and all the servants were following the Ward case through television and smartphones. The news left everyone in deep shock, and the estate was buzzing with whispers.
"Ward?! Mrs. Abernathy’s assistant?!"
"Absolutely! That's him! I had a bad feeling about him the moment I laid eyes on him. Always looked like a bad egg!"
"Oh, God. Erica. Poor Erica! Such a sweet girl, gone just like that!"
The servants teared up, their sobbing filling the air.
"Erica's death is half on Elspeth! How could she allow such a dangerous man in the house?! She's too selfish; do servants' lives mean nothing?!" A voice cried out in righteous indignation.
"Do you think our 'noble' lady of the house ever considered us as equals?!" A maid, who was close with Erica, spat out, "The mother and daughter are nothing but ruthless capitalists, more venomous than a scorpion's sting! Erica had suffered so much under them. Sometimes, they would call her in the middle of the night, not letting her sleep. Once when she was changing, I saw bruises on her arm. When I asked her if Elspeth and her daughter were mistreating her, she just kept quiet."
"That's just heartbreaking! Elspeth and Glynnis are like a pair of barking dogs, always yapping!"
Everyone nodded in agreement. They had long grown tired of Elspeth and Glynnis, feeling helpless against the power of the Abernathy Group.
"Alas! Back when Mrs. Evadne Abernathy was still married to Mr. Thaddeus Abernathy, she treated all of us well; she always defended us, never put on airs. When she left, she took the last vestige of humanity with her. If not for the money, I'd rather go pick up trash!"
"Well, why don't you go and do just that, stop whining here?!" A sharp voice suddenly pierced through the chatter, making everyone jump!
They saw Glynnis, her face red with anger, striding towards them in high heels, "What did you just say? Say it again!"
The room fell silent, with everyone too scared to utter a word.
"You cowards, speak up, why aren't you saying anything now?" Glynnis sneered, her expression full of contempt, "Humph, inferior creatures, no wonder you're destined to be servants for a lifetime! You better watch your mouth when you're spending Abernathy's money! If I hear you mention Evadne again, I swear I'll have your whole family evicted from Elmsworth?!"
"What did I say wrong?! Do you treat us like human beings?!" A young and fiery servant retorted, "We signed a labor contract, not a bondage agreement! We are not the Abernathy family’s dogs!"
"How dare you?!" Glynnis' eyes bulged in rage, momentarily speechless.
"Mrs. Evadne Abernathy was pretty inside and out, a thousand times better than you! You're a lady of a wealthy house with no manners, no respect, you're rude! I've had enough of working here! I quit, go ahead, do your worst!" With that, the maid ripped off her name tag and threw it at Glynnis.
"You wretch! You've crossed the line!"
Accustomed to throwing her weight around at home, Glynnis lunged at the servant, slapping her across the face.
All the servants rose up against her, taking off their name tags in protest, resembling a rebellion!
Glynnis was taken aback, but still tried to maintain her haughty demeanor, pointing at them and shouting, "What do you think you're doing? I'll call the police, you'll all be fired! Without the Abernathy family, I'll make sure you won't survive!"
"Glynnis," a stern voice echoed from behind, instantly silencing the chaotic room.
Everyone turned around, bowing slightly, "Good day, Mr. Abernathy."
"Dad?" Glynnis floundered in panic.
Out of nowhere, Frederic and Dennis had appeared behind her! Wasn't he supposed to be on a business trip? How did he get back so suddenly?!
"What were you doing just now? Did you hit someone?" Frederic asked sulkily, his face cold and stern.
"Dad, listen to me, it's their fault!" Glynnis quickly put on a pitiful act, running over to cling to her father's arm like a mistreated rabbit, "These servants were talking behind my back. They were so rude, so disrespectful! They're taking money from the Abernathy family and don't even have the decency to respect their employers! Please, fire them all!"
"So that's your reason for hitting them?" With a darkened face, Frederic ignored her complaints, continuing his questioning, "Just because you're the daughter of the Abernathy family and they're servants, you think you can hit them as you please? What happened to the manners I taught you since you were young? Have you forgotten all of them, or has this always been your behavior when I'm not around?"
"Dad, what are you saying?" Glynnis felt her heart pound in fear as she looked at Frederic in disbelief, "They insulted me and mom. Are you saying I'm at fault? How could you?!"
Regardless of her protests, Frederic remained grim and indifferent. The servants felt a sense of closure and started to leave.
Frederic, as the head of the prestigious Abernathy Group, always treated even the most ordinary employee with kindness. He would never let his power and status trample upon the dignity of common people.
