A violent ringing echoed in Cassius's ears. The color drained from his face as he grabbed Jason's stiff arm. "What did you just say? What do you mean Evadne is missing?"
Unable to control his emotions, his trembling voice carried through the room. The entire Ashbourne family heard him.
"Cassius! Did you say Evadne is missing?" someone shouted. "How is that possible? We just spoke on the phone this morning."
Arnold and the rest of the Ashbourne boys crowded around, sheer disbelief etched across their faces.
"Evadne... something happened to my Evadne?" Emeric's body swayed violently in his wheelchair. The shock hit him like a physical blow, leaving a deafening ring in his ears and turning his blood to ice.
The overwhelming surge of panic was too much for his fragile state. A metallic taste flooded his throat as he suddenly doubled over. He coughed violently, vomiting a mouthful of dark blood.
"Dad!"
Chaos erupted in the Ashbourne household. The family rushed to Emeric's side. The two older women and the youngest sister, Nydia, burst into uncontrollable tears. Even Elvis, who had been standing in the corner trying to maintain his composure, sprinted over to support his father's frail, collapsing frame.
"Dad, how are you feeling? Don't scare me like this," Elvis choked out. His heart pounded erratically in his chest, a suffocating wave of despair rising in his throat and threatening to pull him under.
"Everyone, stay calm. I'm here. Dad is going to be fine," Chasel declared.
He immediately rushed forward, crouching beside the wheelchair to press his fingers against Emeric's wrist and check his pulse.
"Derek, I'm sorry. Please pass a message to His Majesty," Cassius said.
His eyes were bloodshot, his voice entirely hoarse. "Until Evadne is found, and until my father's condition stabilizes, I cannot return to Helgen with you. Please postpone the coronation ceremony."
Derek stared at him in stunned dismay. "You can't do that. This concerns the very foundation of the royal family and the political stability of Helgen. Every day you delay your return is another day the country remains in turmoil. Besides, I'm just a royal guard. I don't have the authority to make that call."
Arnold surged forward, pushed past his breaking point. Camille tried to hold him back, but he was unstoppable. "To hell with your political turmoil! Don't act like we don't understand how it works. Half of Helgen's power belongs to the royals, and the other half is with Parliament. Your President is married to my sister Debby. The First Lady is an Ashbourne. And now the Crown Prince is my oldest brother. What damn political issues could you possibly have? From now on, the Ashbourne family runs Helgen."
