Evadne felt a surge of fury rise within her, her fists clenched tight.
That snake-tongued weasel! Blatantly twisting the truth. He was the one with murder in his heart, and now he was trying to sling mud at Thaddeus, stirring up trouble and driving a wedge between Thaddeus and the Fairhaven Group, all to ensure Barry's unwavering support.
"Thaddeus, this is a matter of honor for both our esteemed families. You mustn't take it lightly!"
Elspeth assumed her role with a commanding presence, feigning concern for Thaddeus while seemingly looking out for the greater good, "We know that since the divorce, you've felt indebted to Ms. Ashbourne. It's only natural that you'd want to champion her cause after her mishap."
"Champion her cause? Elspeth, what on Earth are you implying?"
Gary's patience was wearing thin, his eyebrows knitted in disapproval, "When did the Fairhaven family ever offend Mr. Thaddeus Abernathy to deserve his wrath? Are we to be treated as pushovers, as mere punching bags? Do not test our limits!"
His words ignited a firestorm among the Fairhaven Group; their gazes upon Thaddeus were seething with animosity.
"Oh Gary, it’s a misunderstanding. What beef could Thaddeus possibly have with the Fairhaven Group? He and Jareth go way back, allies through thick and thin."
Elspeth's lips curled into a mocking smirk, her cold gaze flickering towards Evadne, "The one with a bone to pick is Ms. Ashbourne. The whole of Elmsworth know about the bad blood between her and Ms. Edith Fairhaven - like oil and water, they are. Now that Evadne's had an accident and the Fairhaven Group nearly clinched the competition, it's clear she's not over it. Thaddeus wanting to seek justice for Ms. Ashbourne isn't all that surprising."
The crowd was stunned!
It was no secret that Evadne and Edith didn't see eye to eye. But to fabricate such a tale to smear the Fairhaven Group’s name, was this really happening?
Emeric's face was a canvas of frost, his lips pressed into a thin line. Such vile and despicable antics were beneath him. To even spare another glance at this woman would be an insult to his own dignity!
Just as Thaddeus and Cassius were ready to speak up, someone else beat them to the punch.
"Elspeth, I never thought that after all these years, you'd still be so unrepentant."
Myra, usually timid, stood her ground, her eyes flashing defiance, "Twenty years ago, you were a master of deceit, and it seems you haven't changed one bit. You're still as vile and venomous, unfit for polite society! But you've picked the wrong target this time. Evadne, with her grace and benevolence, has done countless good deeds, helped so many. Her reputation in Skyrim is unassailable, not something you can tarnish with a few twisted words! I'm not the same Myra you used to trample on. You can use your venomous tongue to backstab and humiliate me, but don't think for a second you can hurt Evadne!"
Everyone was dumbfounded!
Myra, true to her appearance, was gentle as a stream, and this was probably the harshest she had ever spoken. She stood up not for herself, but because she couldn't bear to see Evadne bullied by that wicked woman.
"Myra." Evadne's voice was choked with emotion, fighting back tears.
"Ha, Mrs. Myra Ashbourne, when have I ever wronged you? Be careful not to spit venom that isn't there."
Elspeth shrugged, feigning innocence, but her words were barbed, "Everything I've said is the truth. Back then, it was you who couldn't keep on the straight and narrow, indulging in forbidden substances that caused the inability to control urine and led to your downfall. No one forced you. Who wronged you? If you were truly innocent back then, why didn't you clear your name instead of fading into obscurity? Now you feel emboldened, don't you? Having become the noble Mrs. Ashbourne and bearing a daughter for Chairman Emeric, you think times have changed. You're using this as an excuse to seek revenge, aren't you? Hahaha, you say I'm unfit for the high table? Are you any better as a mistress?"
The room fell silent, the air thick with tension. Even the Fairhaven family were taken aback by Elspeth's audacity; her words were far too brazen!
Glynnis, seeing Frederic's face darken, his lips twitching with anger, felt a cold sweat break out. Even she thought Elspeth had gone too far, her demeanor unnervingly agitated. Especially those last remarks - they were practically an open insult!
Myra was shaking with fury, her whole body trembling with rage. At that moment, Emeric wrapped an arm around her shoulder, his warm palm resting on her, his fingers gently exerting pressure.
Though silent, Myra could feel the strong beats of his heart through his chest, her eyes brimming with tears. With him by her side, she had a safe harbor, a shoulder to lean on.
"Mr. Frederic Abernathy, as the head of your household, can you or can you not control your foul-mouthed wretch?" Emeric's voice cut through the silence, his gaze sharp enough to pierce Elspeth's soul.
The room gasped. Foul-mouthed wretch?!
If you couldn't see his face, you'd never believe these words came from Emeric, the corporate titan! Elspeth was livid, her face redder than a beetroot! Yet, as she caught Emeric's piercing stare, she visibly recoiled.
Thaddeus was completely taken aback, his handsome face unsure of what expression to wear, "Chairman Ashbourne really speaks his mind. Evadne, I see now who you take after."
"He only shocks you outsiders. He's always been like this, even more so at home. You'll get used to it," Evadne hadn't finished speaking when her phone buzzed insistently.
She glanced down with a flutter of her long lashes; suddenly, her demeanor shifted as she turned to Elspeth, her lips forming a frosty smile.
"Elspeth, this time you've really crossed the line. Apologize to Mrs. Myra Ashbourne this instant," Frederick commanded with a deep breath, his voice icy.
Elspeth was seething, her teeth grinding in frustration. She had underestimated the protection Emeric afforded Myra, a protection she'd never felt from Frederick!
She dared to challenge Myra, but wouldn't dare cross Emeric, so she reluctantly muttered through clenched teeth, "I was out of line earlier. I apologize, Mrs. Myra Ashbourne."
"Is that it? Just like that?" Emeric's gaze was intimidating, fiery, "Do you think my family is to be trifled with? Do you think my woman can be bullied? Also, I heard the vile things you said about my daughter. You think I'm deaf? You think you can fricking dance on my last nerve and a simple sorry will do? The world doesn't work like that."
"Chairman Ashbourne, what do you want then?" Frederick's patience was wearing thin. He wasn't happy with Elspeth causing trouble, but Emeric's attitude towards their Abernathy Group was infuriating.
"The wretch slaps herself twice, once for insulting my woman, once for insulting my daughter. I'll let it slide for Mr. Hamilton Abernathy's sake," Emeric's demand was nonchalant but hit like a bombshell.
The room erupted! Had Mrs. Abernathy slap herself? Might as well ask someone to take a dump on her head!
"You've gone so far! I'm a tycoon's wife! I'm Mr. Frederick Abernathy's wife! How dare you make such a demand?!" Elspeth shrieked, stomping her foot in a tantrum.
Frederick's expression darkened considerably, but he didn't agree to Emeric's demand. Yet Emeric was out of patience, barking, "Dylan!"
"At your service, Mr. Ashbourne!"
Who was Dylan? Emeric's right-hand man, his enforcer! In a flash, Dylan was in front of Elspeth. Before anyone could react, he swung his arm and delivered two sharp slaps across her face!
"Ah!" Elspeth screamed in pain, her cheeks flaming red and swelling instantly.
Dylan, once a black belt in karate, ensured the woman got what she deserved. As Elspeth was struck, no one moved to intervene, not even the Fairhaven family, who had spoken for her earlier.
