Ever since Elspeth was sentenced to death, Glynnis had been publicly humiliated by Frederic in the courthouse halls. She felt that her already tenuous standing at home had evaporated, and the last vestiges of her father's childhood affection shattered.
She had always relied on Elspeth, living like a parasite fattened on the family's wealth, treating money as if it were mere paper.
But now, with Elspeth's assets seized and her own private stash tied up in Elspeth's accounts, Glynnis had plummeted from the high life back to square one.
Apart from the two properties and the pair of luxury cars her father had given her, plus the three hundred thousand dollars in her personal account, she was practically destitute.
Accustomed to a lavish lifestyle, the taste of poverty was driving Glynnis mad, leaving her as restless as if ants were crawling all over her skin.
Selling the cars or properties would alert Frederic, but what could she possibly do with a mere three hundred thousand?
It wasn't even enough to tip the male escorts she frequented!
After two days of agonizing, it struck her that Elspeth's bedroom safe was still untouched.
The few pieces of jade that were Elspeth's "precious ointments" must still be there, untouched by the authorities. If sold, they could fetch at least ten million!
Glynnis dashed frantically towards Elspeth's bedroom, her eyes bloodshot as she zeroed in on the bedside safe.
She dragged the entire safe onto the table, her eyes gleaming with greed as she fiddled with the combination lock.
After dozens of attempts that left her fingertips numb, she had exhausted every number linked to the Abernathy lineage and Elspeth herself, yet the safe remained sealed.
"Darn it! Why such a complicated combination? You think you can take them with you to the grave?" Glynnis raged, storming out to grab a sledgehammer.
When she burst back into the room, hammer in hand, she was stunned.
Two striking men were now present—Thaddeus and Jareth!
"How did you get in here?" Glynnis stammered, stepping back in shock.
Once, the sight of Jareth would send her into ecstatic fits. Now, only terror gripped her.
Thaddeus sat on the sofa, his handsome features impassive, barely glancing at Glynnis.
"I'm here to fetch something for my wife."
Jareth leaned casually against the desk, his eyes teasing as he tapped the safe, "Marilla's belongings are right here in this safe."
Glynnis's pupils constricted, her voice sharp, "What nonsense are you spewing? There's nothing of hers here! Don't touch that safe, it belongs to me, left by my mother!"
Jareth's eyebrow quirked up, defiantly knocking on the safe thrice—bang, bang, bang!
"Stop, stop knocking!" Glynnis jumped anxiously, fearing the jade inside would shatter.
Thaddeus glanced at Jareth, his face a picture of speechlessness.
It was hard to believe this carefree man was poised to lead the Fairhaven empire. He hoped Jareth wouldn't drive the family into the ground.
Quite the scene—it was like a raid!
After the men had left, Glynnis stood frozen, hammer in hand, staring at the empty safe, her head pounding as if it'd been struck.
Only after a while did she burst into tears, her cries echoing through the room.
Then her phone rang.
Wiping her teary, snot-streaked face, she squinted at the screen through swollen eyes. A long-forgotten name flashed before her.
Her heart clenched as she hit the answer button, cautiously bringing the phone to her ear.
"Hello."
"That voice—sounds like you're mourning your mother," the person on the other end drawled, with more than a hint of schadenfreude.
Glynnis gritted her teeth, "Edith, your mouth is still as foul as ever!"
"Long time no see. Miss me?"
"Hah. Cut the crap. Aren't you stuck in Aetheria, unable to even return to Elmsworth?"
"Who says I can't come back? Jareth wants to keep me caged like a criminal, casting aside sibling bonds for a fool. I won't let him off easily!" Edith's tone was bitter and venomous.
