"Evadne, you and Thad, you're not even legally married."
Evadne's pupils contracted sharply, her breath hitched.
"He hasn't proposed, no wedding bells have rung. Not three years ago, not now. Not even a decent diamond ring to speak of. And yet, he dares to call himself your husband? Laughable."
Avery tenderly took her soft hand, gently kissing the back of it before slipping a shimmering pear-shaped pink diamond ring onto her finger.
Evadne wanted nothing more than to fling it into the ocean's depths.
But she was paralyzed, allowing Avery to manipulate her as he pleased.
"Thad is too indecisive, too scared to take a step forward or back. A man so feeble and cowardly truly doesn't deserve you."
Avery pressed her ring-clad hand against his chest, his eyes burning with an almost hysterical fervor, "What he can't give you, I will. We can have a romantic beach wedding right here on Rose Island, with the local wildlife and seabirds as our witnesses. I own a vast field of roses here, and I'll pick the most vibrant, fresh ones for you at dawn. Isn't this the life you've always dreamed of?"
"I have dreamed... but only with Thad by my side!" Evadne glared at him, word by word, "With you, none of this means anything! Avery, no matter how cunning you are, your heart is a barren wasteland where no roses can bloom, not now, not ever."
Avery's smile froze, his pale complexion turning even more ghostly, adding an eerie, cold quality to his demeanor.
Yet, he quickly regained composure, his long, pale fingers reaching for her neck as he leaned in, aiming for the lips he had dreamt of kissing countless times...
