Chapter 4
I stood inside the bedroom door, my heart suddenly racing for no reason. Could Brennan possibly know that I was planning to sneak away?
Taking a deep breath, I eventually walked up to him and timidly said with my head down, “Uncle, did you call for me?”
Brennan’s face was flushed, indicating that he had a high fever.
He frowned at me and took a moment before speaking, “Why have you been so well–behaved these past few days? Did Brittany say something to you privately? She is innocent–minded and straightforward. Whatever she says, she must have your best interests at heart. She doesn’t have any ill intentions towards you.”
I nodded gently and replied lightly, “Uncle, I understood everything.”
Brennan was stunned for a few seconds and snorted coldly, “Rare to see you return to your sensible self, and it’s even harder to hear you respectfully call me Uncle again!”
“Marlene, you have grown up now, and I can’t spoil you like I did when you were a child anymore! The tone I used when scolding you last time was too harsh, and it’s understandable that you feel
resentful!”
“But if you can be as well–behaved in the future as you have been these past few days, I promise I won’t shout at you anymore! So, please don’t be mad at me anymore, okay?”
I nodded obediently again.
He stared at my eyes without saying a word, as if he wanted to see through me.
I felt a little guilty and avoided his gaze.
When my eyes fell on a delivery document and package on the sofa, I was startled.
I urgently applied for a replacement of my ID card and it has been mailed!
But I clearly left my own phone number, how could Brennan have signed for it?
He seemed to have noticed my doubts and said with a heavy nasal voice, “I happened to see the delivery arrive when I came back, so I helped you collect it.”
Brennan looked at me seriously and asked, “Is this a document delivery? What’s inside?”
He picked up the file bag and handed it to me, indicating that I should open it in front of him.
My hands were trembling with nervousness, and my mind was quickly thinking of the words to

respond.
At that moment, my phone rang, and it was a message from my best friend. She had only sent me a
question mark.
This is our commonly used opening phrase. I had a sudden inspiration and handed the phone to Brennan in front of his eyes, then quickly took it back.
“This is a bank credit card issued by my friend. She couldn’t receive it conveniently while working
part–time to earn tuition fees, so she mailed it to me.”
“You see, she just sent me a message asking if I could help her sign for it.”
Brennan was skeptical, so I had no choice but to fold the paper envelope in my hand a few times along the edges of the ID card inside.
“Believe it or not, it’s the bank card!”
I sent a voice message to my sister in front of him.
“Your credit card was just signed for by Uncle a moment ago. You have a day off the day after
tomorrow, so I will deliver it to you.‘
The day after tomorrow happens to be the day I leave. My mentor has booked a flight for me on the morning of the day after tomorrow.
My best friend knew my situation and also knew that I was going to leave.
I sent a random tone message, and she instantly got my meaning and replied, “You help me keep it safe, I mainly rely on it for next semester’s living expenses! Come to the dormitory to find me the day after tomorrow, let’s have lunch together!”
I responded with an OK hand gesture.
Brennan finally believed me and got up,to go back to the bedroom to rest.
I returned to the bedroom and realized that both of my legs had become weak.
Fortunately, Brennan didn’t come to me again. He seemed to be badly burned, and Brittany took
him to the hospital at night.
