Chapter 5 

Brennan’s physical condition has always been good, but this time the high fever came on quite 

violently. 

He hadn’t been to the hospital for a long time, but unexpectedly, this time he was forcibly taken to 

the hospital by Brittany and ended up staying in the hospital for two days. 

He didn’t want to come to the hospital originally. He wanted to take advantage of being sick to rest at home and spend two more days with Marlene. 

He always felt that she had been acting a bit strange in the past few days, but he couldn’t pinpoint 

exactly what was off. In any case, it was a feeling that made him very uneasy. 

But this time he was really sick, even after taking fever–reducing medicine, his temperature still didn’t go down. Brittany video–called him and noticed that he was a bit delirious from the fever, so 

she quickly took him to the hospital. 

He fainted from the fever as soon as he arrived at the hospital, and when he woke up, it was already 

the next day. 

While he was in a deep sleep, he seemed to have dreamt about Marlene in a dazed state. 

It was the summer of her seventeenth year when he took her for an outing. 

She was wearing a white dress that day, with her hair tied up in a high ponytail, running and playing 

with him in the grass. 

In that instant when she turned back, the smile on her face amazed him greatly. 

He only realized that the little girl he had raised by himself had grown into a young lady. He suddenly felt a flutter in his heart, but immediately he warned himself not to feel this way. 

Since then, he deliberately kept his distance from her. 

But she seemed to have noticed his aloofness and instead became fonder of clinging to him. 

Marlene seemed to also feel her own growth, always unintentionally revealing her feminine side in 

front of him. 

On her 18th birthday, she drank a lot of alcohol and then, after getting drunk, confessed her feelings to him. 

But he got very angry, and the innocent little girl in his heart unexpectedly learned the tricks of seducing men from other women. 

The more he thought like this, the more he realized that Marlene was very deep in her thoughts.

When Brittany reminded him before, he didn’t think much about it. 

Now it seems that Brittany’s words were all true. Marlene, because she didn’t have a mother to teach her since she was young, learned bad habits at a young age. 

He said to himself that he must live up to Marlene’s parents, and he would supervise her more strictly. After she graduated, he would arrange for her to join the company and find a suitable 

marriage partner for her. 

After getting married and having children, she naturally settled down. 

But in the past few days, she changed, as if she had turned back into the little girl she used to be. 

This made him feel a sense of guilt inexplicably rising in his heart. He realized that his previous reaction was too excessive. In fact, she was only twenty years old and had been raised by him since childhood. How could she have such cunning? 

He even felt that Brittany was becoming sensitive, if it weren’t for her constantly instilling in him that Marlene was intentionally trying to provoke their relationship, he wouldn’t have become increasingly indifferent towards Marlene. 

After he was discharged from the hospital, he must find an opportunity to talk to Brittany. Both of them are very important to him, and he doesn’t want there to be so much hostility between the two 

of them. 

Especially on the second day after he woke up, Marlene deliberately sent him a message to greet 

him. 

She was still sulking with herself but didn’t forget to care about him, which touched him a little. 

He had originally intended to reply to her personally, but Brittany had already replied for him, so he 

didn’t have much else to say. 

The next day after being discharged, the first thing he did after completing the formalities was to call Marlene to let her know he was safe. She must have been really worried at home. 

The phone was answered by her good friend, and only then did he remember that she had made plans with her friend to have a meal together after finishing delivering the things. 

Brennan was discharged from the hospital and returned home, waiting for Marlene to come back so 

they could have a good talk. 

He waited until the afternoon but she didn’t come back. With nothing to do, he went to her room. 

The room remained the same as it was when she came at the age of seven, except that new things 

were added every year.
