Chapter 104 Mean Streak
‘She won the jade ring, fait and square,‘ Micah said. ‘And since when did it become our family heirloom? You bought the ring at an auction.”
‘I intended to pass it down to you, then to my grandkids. That makes it an heirloom!‘ Morton shouted. ‘I have to get it back from her.‘
‘And you think besmirching her name in public is going to do that for you? Come on, Dad.‘
‘I offered her money. She refused to take it. Since she won’t respond to the soft touch, let’s see how she likes
it when I go hard.”
‘I’m still negotiating with her. It’s just going to take some time.‘ Micah felt a familiar sensation of throbbing
behind his temples.
Lately, talking to his father felt like talking to a wall.
All it achieved was giving Micah a headache.
‘Time for what? For her to toy with you?‘ Morton was angry. ‘Can’t you see she used you as a stepping stone? You’ve only been divorced for less than six months. She’s already involved with three different men. Do you expect her to change her mind and come back to you?‘
Micah gripped his phone. ‘We are talking about the post, not my private life.‘
‘But you are calling because of her, aren’t you? You want me to take down the post because of her. That means you still have feelings for her. Don’t bother denying it. I know you, son. You won’t be doing this if you don’t
care about her.‘
‘There are other ways to get your ring back. We don’t have to resort to such…underhand tactics.‘
Micah was starting to see where Felicia got her mean streak.
It wasn’t nice for a son to speak ill of his father, but Micah had to admit, Morton hadn’t set a good example for
his children.
Neither had their mother, Judy.
Instead of confronting a problem head–on, both his parents preferred to discredit the enemy.
Their logic seemed to be, if they couldn’t get rid of the problem, they could get rid of the person who created the problem.
It went against Micah’s personal philosophy, one of the myriad reasons he’d rather spend time at work than at
home.
Unlike Felicia, who grew up being the apple of their parents‘ eye, Micah spent his formative years in a boarding
school.

Then he joined the army.
After that, he was busy with starting and running his own business.
Looking back, Micah realised he’d spent more than half of his life away from his parents, a fact he didn’t know if he should be glad about.
‘Whatever happened to the boy who always had his eyes on the prize?‘ Maton yelled. ‘Who wanted to win by fair means or foul? Don’t you start lecturing me about tactics. I’m telling you, the post is staying up there until it gets me what I want. That woman’s going to come to me on her knees, begging to return the ring. Just you
wait and see.‘
He hung up without waiting for a reply.
Morton tossed his phone aside.
He replayed the conversation in his head and decided that he’d handled it perfectly.
Micah was usually decisive, but his judgement seemed to be flung out the window any time that woman was
involved.
It was time he was taught a lesson.
Whatever Darya offered to pay the reporter to take down the post, Morton had promised to double it.
He wanted the woman to suffer.
Was slut shaming below the belt?
Maybe, but it worked.
When she couldn’t set foot outside her house without getting her pictures taken, when she couldn’t go
anywhere without having a microphone thrust in her face, when she saw her name being splashed across the
tabloids day in, day out, she would cave.
She would learn that the power of paparazzi could bring down a princess, let alone someone like her.
She would crawl to him, waving a white flag.
He would get the ring back, and then, only then, he would remove the post.
But the damage would already be done.
The public would forever brand her as a woman who tried to sleep her way to the top.
She was the promiscuous one, not Micah.
She broke up the marriage, not Micah.
And if men like Avery McAllister knew what was good for them, they’d stay away from her.
Darya Miller could kiss her dream of marrying a rich husband goodbye.
Morton nodded to himself, satisfied with the plan.
He whiled away the morning in the greenhouse, tending to his orchids.

Women were like flowers, he thought,
They were beautiful but vulnerable.
Without shelter and protection, they couldn’t survive on their own.
He checked the post every two hours and was pleased by the way public opinion was swinging
He had lunch, took a nap, woke up, and checked the post again.
As expected, Darya Miller was being branded a slut, a gold digger, a calculating woman who used men to advance her self–serving goals.
To his surprise, the Paragon Group had yet to issue a statement denouncing the post.
Was Avery going to stand by his girlfriend? Morton wondered.
It didn’t matter, he decided..
The woman’s reputation was trashed.
She was toast.
If she was smart, she’d know whom she had to beg to get out of the predicament.
