Chapter 107 Rags To Riches

Not really,Callan said. Just that he’s an arrogant SOB, and that he has a son who’s really good at making

money.

He wasn’t always arrogant, you know,Darya said. Morton Cavanaugh grew up poor. Dropped out of high school because his family couldn’t make ends meet, let alone pay his tuition fees. He once worked as a gas station clerk. Another time as a janitor. He had ten different jobs before he hit the age of twenty.

You don’t say.Callan sat up, intrigued. I never heard this before. He doesn’t look like a guy from humble

beginnings.

That’s because he tried hard to bury his past. After he made his first million, he moved to Hagen, distanced

himself from his old friends, never talked about his parents or hometown. I only pieced together his history

from what Judy let slip.

Still doesn’t explain why he hates you, though.

Because I remind him of his past. I’m a nobody, just like he used to be.

Marshmallow trotted over and jumped onto Darya’s lap.

She scratched him between the ears.

Callan shook his head. Are you calling the daughter of one of the country’s richest men a nobody?

Not me. The person he hates is Darya Miller, the persona I created when I married Micah. Darya Miller is an

orphan, spent her formative years living on the street, received subpar education, lived from pay cheque to pay

cheque, survived on her wits, scammed her way into a rich life by marrying Micah, but still couldn’t shed her lowclass background.

So he’s a snob,Callan said disdainfully. He hates you because you are poor.

He hates himself,Darya corrected her brother. Despite having money, Morton had a hard time fitting into Hagen’s high society. He was viewed as an upstart, a country bumpkin who got lucky. Those from old money

looked down their noses at him.

Dad comes from old money. Dad doesn’t look down his nose at anyone.

But not everyone’s like Dad. After getting laughed at one too many times, Morton vowed to change things. He tried really, really hard to gain acceptance into the upper class. Did you know that he hired a lifestyle coach? It was the same one he hired for Judy and Felicia. That’s how I knew.

What’s a lifestyle coach?

He taught Morton how to dress, where he should go for holidays, how to play golf, how to hold intelligent conversations about art and fine wines. Morton donates millions of dollars to charities every year, not because

he wants to give back to society, but because his coach told him it’s the done thing for the upper class. Did you

know he has two drawers full of cufflinks? All monogrammed

‘Wow. The guy sounds. Callan struggled to find the right word. I don’t know what to say. It’s like he’s trying

too hard.

Darya smiled Morton’s not a bad guy at heart. He’s just too desperate to erase and rewrite his past. He decorates his office with fancy, overpriced art. He spoils his kids, sends them to prestigious schools because he wants them to have what he couldn’t. He also wants them to marry someone from a respectable, elite family. Preferably blue blood. The older he grows, the more fixated he becomes on the idea. It’s become an obsession.

Hence his eagerness to drive me out of Micah’s life,

Huh. He must have blown a fuse when Micah married you, I’m surprised he tolerated you for three years.

Darya shrugged. I know, right?

Is Micah anything like his old man?

God, no. He got his father’s fighting spirit and tenacity, but not the old man’s snobbishness. That part’s inherited by Felicia, sadly.

Callan stretched and yawned. It’s like Dad always says, money changes people.

Darya agreed. ‘Morton could have been an inspiration to others. His is a classic ragstoriches story. Too bad he’s embarrassed by his own past.

Let’s forget about the old man.Callan stood up. I’m hungry.

Darya rose as well. Dad’s flying back tomorrow, right? What time does his plane touch down?

Avery has the details. Sometime in the afternoon, that’s all I know. I’ll be there to pick him up.

I’m coming with you. I’ve been cooped up in the house for three days. I think I’m going stircrazy.

Are you sure that’s a good idea?Callan hesitated. There could be reporters.

I’ve got nothing to hide. Why should I be afraid to face them? She relented when she saw the worry on her brother’s face. We’ll both be wearing disguises, won’t we? And arrange a couple more bodyguards if you aré still concerned.

Fine.Callan tousled her hair. You know I could never say no to you.

Don’t worry. All this will blow over soon. In another seventytwo hours, it’s old man Morton who’ll have to worry about the reporters.

The next afternoon, both Darya and Callan got ready.

They prepared themselves to run the media gauntlet.

As rehearsed, Callan went out first.

His yellow LaFerrari was spotted the moment if left the gated community.

Reporters armed with cameras and microphones swarmed forward.

The car was boxed in.
