As the head of the family, Matthias’s attitude was more important than Avery’s.

‘Mr McAllister, is Miss Miller going to be your daughter–in–law?‘ A reporter shouted.

Matthias’s face was livid with anger with he heard the ridiculous question.

He maintained his composure, though, striding forward without saying a word.

He had no intention of feeding the paparazzi.

All would be revealed soon enough.

Darya was quiet, as well.

Soon, airport security and Callan’s bodyguards rushed to the scene, forming a mobile cordon around the trio.

Callan opted to stay in his car to avoid fanning the flames.

But the short walk to their car was still filled with obstacles.

Callan’s fans, who saw the live stream earlier, had followed the scent and traced him to the airport.

Upset by their idol’s secret romance, they went crazy at the sight of Callan’s alleged girlfriend.

‘Bitch! Stay away from Callan!‘

‘Whore! You’re not good enough for Cal!‘

‘Break up with him! Or I swear I’m going to curse you to hell and back!‘

The agitated fans, mostly teen girls, shoved at the security guards and shouted insults at Darya.

Suddenly, someone in the crowd hurled a plastic water bottle.

It would have struck Matthias, but Darya dived in front of her father.

The full bottle hit her right on the forehead.

She stumbled back, startled.

Avery, infuriated, stared down the crowd of crazed fans and instructed the nearest bodyguard, ‘Find the culprit. Call the police! I want whoever threw the bottle to be arrested!‘

‘Yes, boss.‘

The guard bent down to retrieve the water bottle.

The rest of the security detail hustled to escort the trio into the waiting Lincoln limousine.

Darya settled into the front passenger seat, heaving a huge sigh of relief.

None of them spoke until the car had pulled out of the carpark and merged into traffic.

In the rearview mirror, Darya glimpsed Callan’s sedan trailing behind.

She called him. ‘Turn left at the next intersection. You are being followed.‘

‘Are you okay?‘ Avery leaned forward to examine his sister.

‘I’m fine.‘ Darya rubbed her forehead.

The water bottle barely left a mark.

‘Does it hurt?‘

Darya shook her head. ‘Nope.‘

Only then did Avery relax.

Matthias, however, was seething. ‘Who were those people? The girl who threw the bottle didn’t look like a

reporter.‘

‘Callan’s fans, I guess,‘ Avery said.

Matthias frowned. ‘What kind of fans would attack someone in public? What’s their problem?‘

‘They are just sad their idol is no longer single,‘ Darya said. ‘It’s not me they are attacking. They’d hate anyone

who dates their idol.‘

Matthias shook his head. ‘I don’t understand these young people. They should be in school.‘

Avery removed two bottles of chilled mineral water from the small refrigerator and distributed them to his father and sister. ‘The attack on Darya will stop once they know she’s Callan’s sister.‘

‘Speaking of, how are the preparations for the party?‘ Matthias asked. ‘I want it to go off without a hitch.”

‘Everything’s ready,‘ Avery replied. ‘The venue, the caterers, the band, etc. I saw to it myself.‘

‘The invitations, you’ve sent them out?‘

‘Yes.‘

‘Did you invite the Cavanaughs?‘

Avery paused. ‘No. Should I?‘

‘Of course.‘ Matthias sat straighter. ‘I want to see the look on old man Morton’s face when he realises Darya’s my daughter. He’s always wanted his son to marry a girl from a rich family, right? He’s going to eat his heart

out when he discovers what a grave mistake he’s made.‘

‘Is that really necessary, Dad?‘ Darya said. ‘I don’t want to have anything more to do with the Cavanaughs.‘

‘It’s okay, sweetie.‘ Matthias patted her shoulder. ‘It’s time they know who you really are.‘

Darya squeezed her father’s hand, grateful.

Families were supposed to look out for each other, as Matthias often told his children.

Her experience at the Cavanaughs‘ was an exception.

While their car navigated traffic, news about what transpired at the airport was spreading like wildfire.

Comments flooded in, most of them taking a dim view of the woman in the centre of the media storm.

‘The old Mr McAllister looks pissed,‘ one comment said. ‘I don’t think he likes Darya for a daughter–in–law.‘

‘His opinion doesn’t matter. Avery’s does.‘
