Chapter 35 Drinking

Contest 2

She closed her eyes as if savouring the taste of the wine. Gentle baked apple notes. Some nuances of yeastiness. A lemony clarity. Hints of honey and cream. But missing the old oaky caramel flavour that characterises the previous vintage. Overall, not bad. I’d give it a six out of ten.

She turned the bottle upside down.

Not a drop dripped out.

Your turn,she challenged.

Ryan gulped.

The glass of wine he’d downed contained 150 ml.

He’d need to drink another four glasses just to catch up with Darya.

His eyes darted around, looking for a way out.

Winfred Barrett stood behind him, blocking his path.

What’s the matter?Darya smiled. Are you chicken?

The alcohol surged its way up to Ryan’s brain.

He clenched his jaw. I was just getting started.

Darya made an inviting gesture towards the glass table.

A minute ago, Harley had signalled to the bartender, who brought forth six more bottles of wine.

Ryan yanked open his jacket, then grabbed a random bottle.

He might not be able to drink everyone under the table, but he’d sure as hell not lose to a girl.

No, not a girl.

A housewife.

Ryan thought disdainfully as he guzzled the wine.

But he’d forgotten that he’d already had a few before he came over.

As Darya matched him bottle for bottle with perfect ease, Ryan grew increasingly lightheaded.

He would have sunk to his knees if Micah hadn’t supported his weight.

Soon, the table was littered with empty bottles.

Ryan felt his face burning up.

Even the air he breathed out smelled like wine.

His movements slowed.

His vision grew blurry.

He started swaying on his feet.

That’s enough!Micah snatched the halfempty bottle from his hand. Do you want to end up in the ER?’

At the rate he was going, Ryan would be lucky to escape from alcohol poisoning

Micah’s probing gaze landed on Darya.

She remained seated, and the lights were dim, so it was hard to tell if she had turned ruddyfaced like Ryan.

But she sat with her back ramrod straight and maintained that perfect posture throughout.

When she spoke, her speech was clear and unslurred.

She had clearly not reached her limit.

Ryan came to the same conclusion.

He didn’t try to grab the bottle back from Micah.

Instead, he hung his head and stared at the floor, a silent gesture for admitting defeat.

Timothy clicked his tongue. So? Are you quitting?

Ryan, unable to get a word out, nodded heavily.

Timothy snickered. That’ll teach you to underestimate our Dolly.

He threw a friendly arm around Darya’s shoulders. Even I don’t dare go up against her in a drinking contest. I don’t know who gave you the guts to challenge her.

Bianca joined the fun. Time to honour your bet.

More blood rushed to Ryan’s face.

The bet.

He’d lost the bet.

Belatedly, he realised that he’d walked into a trap.

He’d seen how protective Bianca, Harley and the Barrett brothers were towards Darya.

Yet, none of them stood up to turn down the challenge when he came over.

They just sat by and watched him make a fool of himself.

It was too late for regret now.

Ryan gripped his pantlegs.

He looked to Darya, begging silently.

He was Micah’s best friend.

Surely, that counted for something?

If Darya wanted to get back together with Micah, she wouldn’t miss the chance to do his friend a solid, would
