Chapter 44 Marriage Is More Than Just Love
Micah clenched his fists.
Maybe it was pride, maybe it was something else, but he refused to accept that Darya could fall for someone else so soon after the divorce,
He still remembered the way she used to look at him–like he was the centre of her whole world.
In the past month, rumours had been flying about her dating Avery McAllister.
And now this Timothy Barrett was clearly pursuing her as well.
Micah didn’t take either of them seriously–there was no love in her eyes when she looked at Timothy.
It led him to believe that she was driven by circumstances to acknowledge her relationship with Timothy. Micah felt responsible, since Darya had left his house with nothing but the clothes on her back.
Which was probably why she had to take the job at Paragon, and why she had to attend this client dinner she was ill–prepared for.
He tried to extend an olive branch. ‘You don’t have to force yourself to be with him just for money. As my ex- wife, you are entitled to alimony. If you’ll give me your bank account info, I can set up—‘
‘You think I’m with Tim for his money?‘ Darya placed a restraining hand on Timothy’s arm.
Hot under the collar, Timothy was poised for attack. ‘Belittling your ex–wife. Some man you are.‘
Micah frowned. ‘I didn’t mean-‘
‘I don’t care what you mean,‘ Darya cut him off. ‘Do I need to remind you that we are no longer husband and wife? You don’t get a say in whom I choose to be with. Besides, Tim’s ten times cuter than you.‘
Timothy, blushing slightly, cleared his throat and stood straighter.
‘Whatever his faults,‘ Darya continued, ‘at least he doesn’t have your family.‘
‘What does this have to do with my family?‘ Micah gave her a disapproving look. ‘This has nothing to do with
them.‘
Darya wagged a finger at him. ‘You are wrong. This has everything to do with them.”
She used to believe that marriage was just about the union of two people in love.
But reality taught her a lesson the hard way–while romance was about two people in love, marriage was so much more.

Chapter 44 Marriage Is More Than Just Love
It was about the union of two families.
Judy Cavanaugh disapproved of her as a daughter–in–law from the very beginning because she claimed to be an orphan, which meant she had no connections and couldn’t be of any help to Micah’s business.
Felicia looked down on her because she wasn’t rich and didn’t have a prominent last name.
Thinking of all the chores they ordered her to do and all the verbal abuse
endured, Darya wished she could
turn back the clock and stop herself from making the mistake of marrying Micah Cavanaugh
Luckily, she’d come to her senses in time.
‘I’d rather be with Tim and be called a gold digger, than stay with you and be treated like a slave by your mother and sister.‘ Darya planted a kiss on Timothy’s cheek. ‘Let’s go.”
‘Just a sec, babe.‘ Timothy flashed a smile at Darya, secretly thrilled when she didn’t
object to him calling her
‘babe.‘
He squatted down in front of Howard, who’d been trying to crawl away unnoticed. ‘You are the one who wanted to drug my Dolly?‘
Howard, face swollen and his stomach hurting like hell, could only deny. ‘I didn’t. It wasn’t me. It was…‘
Timothy didn’t waste time listening to the man.
He glanced at the glass table, covered with close to a dozen bottles of liquor. ‘Which one did you put the drug
in?‘
‘Not the bottles,‘ Darya reminded him. “The wine glasses.”
Micah watched the woman who remained unflappable throughout.
If she knew about the drug in advance, then she didn’t need him to save her.
He’d just made a fool of himself, again.
Timothy cocked an eyebrow.
He picked up the nearest empty glass, filled it with red wine, then held it next to Howard’s face. ‘Drink up.‘
‘No, no…‘ Howard cowered. ‘I’m sorry! I’m sorry. I-‘
Clamping a hand on his jaw, Timothy forced the man to open his mouth and poured the drink down his throat.
He repeated this three more times until Howard started puking
Rising to his feet, Timothy wiped his hands on a tissue Darya offered. ‘Now we can go, babe.‘
Micah could only stand there and watch them leave.
He had no right to stop her, though he very much wanted to.
Her words were still ringing in his ears–‘treated like a slave by your mother and sister.‘
Not for the first time, he wondered exactly what Judy and Felicia had done to Darya.
His gaze landed on Howard, who had started sweating and was tearing his own clothes off
