"No, it's you who’s going to call off the marriage."
After all, she was a divorcee, and Noah had a good reputation. He should be the one to call off the marriage.
"I refuse." Noah shot to his feet. His eyes turned gloomy. "Is this because of Joseph?"
"No, of course not," Chloe denied, her agitation and disdain clear. "I just don't want to hold you back."
She would never go back to her ex. Vulgar and despicable men did not deserve second chances.
"Stop. The marriage will happen unless I drop dead."
Noah’s unfamiliarly cold and gloomy expression stunned Chloe. This was her first time hearing such extreme words from him. She got all tongue-tied and could not even begin to imagine what he knew about that night.
Feeling frustrated, Noah lowered his head to hide his coldness. He knew that he should not lose his patience, but he just could not hold back his anger at her suggestions of calling off their marriage. He had been so nice to her and had kept her company for five years, assuming that this would touch her heart. Unfortunately, it failed.
Why did she insist on seeing Joseph after knowing full well what kind of person he really was? Noah could not figure it out or accept it, choosing to pretend that it never happened, though there was a limit to his patience. He did not know how to confront her. He was afraid that he might fail to control his temper.
Noah took a few deep breaths and calmed himself. When he looked up again, he had regained his gentleness. He held her hand tenderly. "Stop contacting Joseph now that we're engaged. Grandpa will not let you marry anyone else unless I'm dead. I'll always be his first choice."
Chloe stared at him for a while before she retracted her hand. "But—"
“No more buts. I’m confident you'll grow to like me. You're just not used to our new relationship yet."
