Joseph noticed the dark circles under Chloe's eyes, evidence that she had not slept well last night. He said in a solemn tone, "I don’t know everything, but I can assure you that it was Noah and Duskfall that had planned that hospital fire five years ago.”
Chloe was stunned and her eyes blazed. "He’s one of my child’s murderers?"
"Yes."
"But... why..."
Noah had always treated her with such kindness. He had helped get her overseas, accompanied her, and even brought her back to the Sullivan family. He gave her a home she had always dreamed of. Joseph's eyes flashed with a hint of regret, but he still revealed to her what he had discovered.
"On the day of the fire, the lines to the fire department were tied up for twenty minutes. This delay had allowed the fire to spread. As for Noah, he arrived within ten minutes after the fire started. Regardless of whether he’s familiar with the hospital's layout, and unless he was already nearby and within a kilometer of the hospital, he couldn't possibly have saved you. Exotic Star is ten kilometers away from the hospital, not to mention the Sullivan manor. They aren’t in the same area."
Given the premeditated nature of the whole plan and the perfect timing, there were no other possibilities.
Chloe's face turned pale as she stumbled a few steps backward. She was greatly shocked. She had trusted Noah wholeheartedly and never doubted his intentions. But now that trust had shattered, and she saw things in a different light, and she suddenly saw all the signs that she had missed.
Joseph gently patted her back, his tone was uncharacteristically soft as he said, "Go ahead and cry if you want to. It's good to let it all out."
"Do you think Duskfall could have forced Noah somehow?" Chloe's eyes filled with tears as she stubbornly tried to deceive herself. She was still unwilling to accept the harsh reality.
After all, whether it's friendship or love, how many five years of friendship does a person have? Who could have accepted this?
Joseph's comforting hand paused. His expression involuntarily turned cold as a surge of jealousy erupted in his chest. "What kind of love potion has Noah fed you?"
He found it hard to believe that Chloe was still holding out hope of Noah's innocence. Why had she not extended the same level of trust to him?
"I need some time alone," Chloe said, her eyes dull and lifeless.
Joseph clenched his fist, turmoil surging swirling inside him as he stared at Chloe. His emotions tore him apart but he ultimately could not bring himself to be harsh with her. He exited the office and went to the rooftop to compose himself, slamming the door on his way out.
Once he had calmed down, Joseph sought out Lucas and asked, "How do you comfort a girl when she's upset?"
Lucas pondered for a long time but could not come up with anything, "Sir, I'm as single as a slice of cheese. I don't understand these things."
