When Miranda heard the words "Crow's Eye," her eyes flickered, just for a moment.
Beck kept talking. “Yeah, that’s right. I’m talking about that ruthless, mysterious mercenary group that’s blown up over the last couple years. Only, they’re not really mercenaries—no hired guns. It’s more like a dozen or maybe a few dozen evolved types, just like you guys, working together. We don’t actually know how many there are.”
He glanced around the room, making sure everyone was following. “Here’s the kicker—they’re a straight-up criminal syndicate. Totally above the law, running wild, slaughtering civilians, blowing stuff up, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction. And because they’ve all got these special abilities, there’s nothing to stop them from pulling off whatever they want.”
“That’s why they’re way more dangerous than your usual merc group. They can do things nobody else can, and they rarely get involved in actual wars. Most of the time, they’re hired for all kinds of shady, off-the-books jobs by powerful people from all over the world.”
As Beck spoke, the screen behind him flashed with a dossier on Crow’s Eye.
Not that it was much help. The member list was blank—just a rough overview of the powers they’d seen and the carnage left behind. The scenes of their crimes, the bodies—they were all described in chilling detail.
Miranda skimmed through it. It was almost identical to the info Charles had sent her.
Of course, Charles had his own ways of getting information. He always seemed to have more details than the official reports—hazard of running business on both sides of the law, she supposed.
Beck’s voice grew more serious. “So far, our own people haven’t really crossed paths with Crow’s Eye. That means we don’t have much concrete intel. But that’s about to change.”
He paused for effect, and the whole room was silent.
“We’ve just confirmed that Crow’s Eye has infiltrated Virell. Their target? Next week’s Virell Museum exhibition—the ‘Dragon’s Crest Disc.’ I don’t need to tell you what kind of place Virell is. They’re going to try to steal the artifact, and calling in the National Guard or the army won’t help. These guys don’t play by any normal rules.”
He let that sink in, then added, “That’s why we need you. Your job’s twofold: first, protect the Dragon’s Crest Disc. Second, do whatever it takes to get us info on Crow’s Eye—who they are, how they operate. By any means necessary.”
