"But Mrs. Foster did it for you, Miss Brown," Hamlin said helplessly.
"We don't have to do this. If anything happens to that girl, Lenny will be furious."
Deciding to postpone her breakfast, Scarlet walked over to the yard.
As soon as she arrived, Rosaline fell to the ground, sweating profusely and her face deathly pale.
There were several tiny nicks in her hands caused by the roses' thorns, which made Scarlet feel sorry for her.
Why didn't she wear gloves?
"Come on. Let's go back inside. It's too hot out here. You'll fall sick if you go on like this."
"No... Mrs. Foster will be angry with me. I... My work is done if I pick a few more roses."
Rosaline held the garden shears tightly and resisted.
Scarlet really wanted to take Rosaline back inside and away from the sun, so she tried to take the garden shears from her.
From the beginning to the end, the pointy end of the shears was directed at Scarlet. But somehow, the shears suddenly turned around and stabbed Rosaline right in the chest.
"Rosaline!" A familiar voice came from the door.
Before Scarlet could see who the newcomer was, she was pushed away. She fell into the rose bushes, and the sharp thorns scratched her face, hands, and legs. She felt painful pricks all over her body.
Not long after Lenny arrived at the office this morning, he heard some news from the Foster family's old mansion.
Marlene had asked Rosaline to come over for a little talk, and that didn't sit well with Lenny. So he hightailed it right away to his grandmother's estate.
As soon as he entered the mansion, he saw Scarlet plunging a pair of garden shears into Rosaline's chest. At the sight of it, he succumbed to a fit of panic and rage.
He shoved Scarlet away, picked up Rosaline and carried her to the car. He didn't bother to look back and check if Scarlet was okay.
Hamlin hurried over and helped Scarlet up.
"Miss Brown!" He was anxious.
"I... I'm fine," Scarlet said in a daze.
At the moment, she couldn't tell which hurt more, the small wounds caused by the roses' thorns or her pride.
"I didn't mean to hurt her. I don't know how... I was trying to get her back inside, and then the next thing I knew, she was getting stabbed. Mr. Carson, you were watching us the entire time, right? I didn't hurt her on purpose." Her heart was racing, and she'd started getting incoherent. She just wanted to prove that she didn't stick those shears in Rosaline's chest.
She wasn't a vicious woman. She and Lenny had already divorced peacefully.
Hamlin had seen clearly what had happened. The sharp end of the garden shears was facing Scarlet the entire time, but Rosaline changed the shears' direction all of a sudden.
It all happened so fast that Hamlin even considered that he'd seen the entire scene wrong.
But even if he was unsure of what really happened, he still would take Scarlet's side firmly.
"Pay her no mind. Let's tend to your wounds first."
Hamlin helped Scarlet back to the living room and applied some ointment on her wounds. Her clothes were ripped in many places, and there were many small cuts all over her body.
"No. I have to go to the hospital. I have to explain what happened to Lenny."
Lenny had misunderstood her just now. She didn't want him to hate her for something she hadn't done.
She stood up and left in a hurry, ignoring Hamlin's persuasion of her to stay.
Scarlet called Drake and found out that Lenny and Rosaline were in the villa now. She knew how to get from the mansion to Lenny's villa.
She arrived in no time and was about to go upstairs but was stopped by Drake.
"Miss Brown, I think it's best if you don't go upstairs right now. Mr. Foster understands that what happened was an accident. I'm sure he's not angry with you. He just wants to make sure that Miss Marshall is okay."
Scarlet knew that Drake was only telling the truth, but his words still stung.
An accident... That might as well be the case, but Scarlet didn't want Lenny thinking that she wanted to hurt Rosaline.
She didn't need his understanding. She only wanted to make clear that she didn't harbor any ill will against Rosaline or anyone and that she would never hurt anyone intentionally.
Scarlet gritted her teeth, rushed into the kitchen, and picked up a pair of kitchen shears.
"Miss Brown!"
Seeing Scarlet with the shears, Drake got nervous. He had no idea what she intended to do.
"Don't worry. I won't hurt anyone. I just want to prove my innocence. Please get out of my way."
She held the pair of shears tightly and pointed it at her body.
Fearing that something would go wrong, Drake had no choice but to let Scarlet go upstairs.
Although Scarlet wasn't all that strong, she was determined and stubborn, and she wasn't inferior to any man in that aspect.
When she arrived at the bedroom, she saw that Lenny was standing at the foot of the bed while a doctor was doing a thorough examination on Rosaline.
She was about to knock on the door when she heard the doctor's words.
"Miss Marshall is pregnant, three months along."
