Three months ago, she followed Lenny abroad alone and planned to talk to him about getting a divorce without Marlene finding out.
She understood that the old lady only wanted to provide shelter for her and protect her from danger. But she couldn't stay in a loveless, meaningless marriage. It wasn't fair to her or to Lenny.
Their entire marriage might have been uneventful, but Scarlet feared that if she and Lenny didn't end things now, Lenny would just grow to resent her because she was the reason he was trapped in a union that he didn't want. And if that happened, once Marlene passed on, living with the Foster family would be difficult for Scarlet.
And she surmised that Lenny would be a harder case to deal with than the Brown family.
"I'm begging you, Grandma. Lenny didn't like our arranged marriage at all. You can protect me now, but I have to face him alone in the future. At that time, if Lenny still doesn't like me, then I will definitely come to no good end. Besides, I don't want you to be against Lenny because of me. After all, he is your grandson. Family should live in peace and harmony."
Hearing this, Marlene reached out and caressed Scarlet's face. She looked at the small cuts all over Scarlet's face, arms, and hands. Marlene couldn't help blaming herself.
"I just don't want you to be too considerate and forgiving. It breaks my heart. You are just like your mother."
"Grandma, I'm really fine. Look at me. I'm happy now. I'm free, and I can do whatever I please. Besides, I like someone from school, okay? You have to let me and Lenny go." Scarlet's sincere pleas dispelled Marlene's anger and made her heave a long sigh.
Scarlet didn't stay with Marlene for much longer, fearing that the old lady would find out about her pregnancy.
She made up an excuse and told Marlene that she had something to deal with in school and left in a hurry.
Lenny had given her a house, which was located near her school. It was convenient to live there because it was in a prosperous district, and it had everything she needed.
Scarlet returned to school as if nothing had happened. She decided that when her baby bump started showing, she would just ask for a sick leave.
After she spent a few peaceful days at school, trouble found its way to her again. She had thought that the Brown family would stop bothering her after Lenny confronted Kyra and Colleen last time. To her dismay, they were still coveting the money and assets that she got from the divorce.
One day, when she was on her way to one of her classes, Kyra showed up and blocked her way.
Scarlet frowned at the sight of her stepmother. "What are you doing here?"
Kyra darted her eyes at Scarlet's belly, which made Scarlet nervous.
Scarlet reflexively put her hands on her stomach and narrowed her eyes at Kyra. "Have you forgotten what Lenny said? Aren't you afraid of him coming after you?"
"He still doesn't know you're pregnant, does he?"
"And how's that any of your business?"
"The child that you're carrying is a bastard of you and some unknown man. Of course you won't dare to tell Lenny." "No, my child is not a bastard," Scarlet hissed.
Kyra scoffed and cocked her head to the side. "Let me give you two choices, Scarlet. One, you give us everything that you got in the divorce. Don't worry. We'll leave some for you. We won't go too far. Or two, you keep your money and properties, and I will tell everyone that you're pregnant. Once word gets out, you will be expelled from this school, and Lenny will make your life a living hell for being unfaithful to him while you were his wife.
Either way, I have nothing to lose. The Brown family is short of money now. We need to cash in, or the Brown Group will go bankrupt. Our family is having a hard time, so don't blame me for being rude to you," Kyra said fiercely.
Hearing that, Scarlet bit her lip and looked at Kyra with resentment.
Kyra was indeed a cunning and ruthless woman. Otherwise, Scarlet's mother wouldn't have lost to her so miserably.
This woman was smarter than Nolan. She took charge of everything at home and in the company, and she dealt with business most of the time.
She was resourceful, decisive, and relentless.
If Scarlet didn't give her what she wanted, everyone would know that she was pregnant.
If that happened, Scarlet might be forced to abort her baby, and her studies would be completely ruined.
Scarlet clenched her fists. She flashed Kyra a death glare, but deep inside, she felt helpless.
