"Fine. You win. I'll give you what you want," Scarlet said through gritted teeth.
"Perfect. See how easy it is to be a good girl? No trouble for you or for me," Kyra sneered. She had already prepared the property transfer agreement. Once Scarlet signed it, all the money and properties she'd got in the divorce would belong to the Brown family.
Finally, Scarlet gritted her teeth and signed her name. Satisfied with what she got, Kyra turned around and left.
Kyra said that she wouldn't go too far after getting Scarlet's money and properties, but all she left Scarlet was a rental apartment with the first three months of rent already paid.
After that, Scarlet would have to make a living on her own.
She didn't dare to make an issue out of it. She just got in touch with her best friend, Yasmin Natt, and asked her for help. Otherwise, she wouldn't have any spending money.
"You need to borrow some money? How much?"
"Two thousand dollars is enough. I need it for everyday expenses. That should last me two months," Scarlet replied, a little embarrassed.
"What happened? Why is Lenny not taking care of you?"
"We have divorced."
"Okay. Still, you should've gotten something out of your divorce settlement. Didn't he give you anything?"
"Well... Let's talk about it when you get back."
Half a year ago, Yasmin left to be an exchange student in a world-renowned foreign university. She was to return this semester.
She was smart and beautiful. She hailed from a rich family and belonged in the upper class circle.
Scarlet and Yasmin met when Marlene took Scarlet to attend a party. The two of them chatted and immediately hit it off. They attended the same school, but they majored in different disciplines.
Although they had only known each other for a short period of time, they quickly became best friends.
"Okay then. I'll talk to you when I come home, okay? Remember to pick me up at the airport next week."
After Scarlet hung up with Yasmin, she received a notification from her bank.
She didn't expect that Yasmin would send her twenty thousand dollars. Did she input the wrong amount? When Scarlet was about to ask, Yasmin sent her a text message. "Use the money. I'll give you more if it's not enough. You're welcome."
When Scarlet saw her best friend's message, she couldn't help feeling warm in her heart.
Come to think of it, her life really wasn't all that bad. She still had a good friend by her side.
At this time, she received a message from the hospital, reminding her of her prenatal checkup.
Last time, she had been too shocked after receiving the news of her pregnancy and hadn't gotten a complete examination.
She made an appointment with the doctor and went to it after getting the text reminder.
"Generally speaking, pregnant women don't get along with the fetus during the first few months of their pregnancy. But when they get to hear their child's heartbeat, they realize soon after that they're carrying a life, not a mere undifferentiated cell," the doctor said.
Listening to her baby's wonderful heartbeat, Scarlet felt overwhelmed by mixed emotions. She was going to become a mother, and when she did, she would dedicate her life to her child.
"Your baby is very healthy. Here are your checkup results. I'll see you at our next appointment, okay? Take care."
The doctor printed out Scarlet's prenatal checkup results, stuffed the papers into a document envelope, and handed the envelope to her.
Those pieces of paper meant a lot to her.
With a smile on her face, Scarlet walked out of the doctor's office. She stroked her belly, lowered her head, and whispered to her baby as she walked. As a result, she bumped into someone.
She staggered and fell backward, but the man that she ran into caught her and broke her fall.
The envelope in her hand fell to the floor.
When she locked eyes with the man that held her, her eyes widened in shock. She didn't expect to bump into Lenny again at the hospital.
Lenny was equally surprised. Last time, he took Rosaline to the hospital to see a psychiatrist. Later, the doctor said that Rosaline's condition wasn't serious. He simply suggested that she went out often, got some fresh air, and got herself familiarized with her environment. Today, Lenny took Rosaline to the hospital for her prenatal checkup. This was the obstetrics and gynecology department. What was Scarlet doing here?
Lenny saw the envelope that Scarlet dropped and picked it up for her.
The envelope bore Scarlet's name together with the seal of the hospital's obstetrics and gynecology department.
"That's mine!"
Scarlet was so anxious that her heart was about to beat itself out of her throat. She tried to grab the envelope from Lenny, but he raised it in the air, putting it out of her reach.
He frowned slightly, wondering if she was sick.
Even though they were already divorced, he wasn't a cold, heartless person. They had been a couple for a year, and even though they weren't together anymore, he would still help her in times of need. He just wanted to know what was wrong with her.
She was thin and frail-looking. If there was something wrong with her health, could she handle it by herself?
"Give it back to me."
"What's wrong with you?" Lenny asked bluntly.
Scarlet stood on tiptoe and tried to take back the envelope. But Lenny was tall, and there was no way she could reach the envelope with him holding it up in the air.
She jumped several times, and eventually, she botched her landing and ended up spraining her ankle slightly. Losing her balance, she bumped her head against his chest.
His chest was so hard and strong that it made her head spin. Feeling a headache coming on, Scarlet hurriedly shook her head.
"Give the envelope back to me!"
She felt so frustrated that her eyes started welling up with tears. She couldn't let him see the contents of the envelope.
"What's wrong with you, Scarlet? Don't make me ask again."
His tone was so firm that it bordered on menacing. He obviously wasn't going to give her the envelope until she answered his question.
Seeing that Scarlet was still unwilling to say anything, Lenny put down the envelope, opened it, and started reaching for the papers inside.
Once again, Scarlet's heart leapt to her throat.
No, no! She would be doomed if he saw her checkup results!
