PART 3 – CHAPTER 114
JESS
I tugged at the hem of my skirt for the hundredth time, feeling like I was one wrong move away from flashing half the campus things they do not want to see.
“I still don’t get why every witch costume in existence has to be so… slutty,” I grumbled, looking over at Sofie, who looked way more comfortable in her own witch getup. But she was short, and her skirt was right above her knees. Mine barely reached the top part of my thigh. Her pointy hat sat perfectly on her curly hair and looked cute. More cute than slut. I was more slut than cute. If I pulled it down, my chest barely stayed covered, and if I pulled it up at the top, I probably showed my thong.
Sofie just laughed, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Oh, come on, Jess. It’s Halloween. It’s like an unspoken rule that everything’s gotta be slutty. I mean, I think I just saw a slutty donut earlier, and I still can’t figure out how that’s even possible.”
I rolled my eyes, pulling the skirt down again. “It’s ridiculous. Witches aren’t supposed to be sexy. They’re supposed to be, I don’t know… terrifying or something. Old hags.”
The whole place was decked out with fake cobwebs, glowing jack–o‘–lanterns, and life–sized skeletons that leaned over the entrance. A giant plastic spider dangled from the roof, swaying slightly in the breeze, adding to the spooky atmosphere.

To my relief, everyone else also dressed the same–a slutty nurse, a sexy cat, and yep, there it was: the slutty donut.
“See?” Sofie said, gesturing toward the crowd. “We’re not the only ones.”
I let out a long breath. “Thank God. At least we blend in.” I pulled out my phone before walking up the steps, hoping there would be a message from Luke – but there wasn’t.
“So… have you heard from Aiden since everything happened with Luke?”
Sofie asked, pulling me out of my own head. What did she ask? Aiden…
I bit my lip, feeling a pang of guilt because as much as I was avoiding him, I was also acutely aware of where he was at all times. “He’s tried a couple times, but I keep making excuses. I don’t know, Sofie. After everything with Luke… I just can’t deal with another guy right now.”
