CHAPTER 3
JESS
We stood in front of the floor–length mirror in my room, admiring our reflections. I couldn’t believe how different we looked. I wore the tight black dress, with my usual messy blond braid now sleek and straight down my back. The dress clung to my body like it was painted on. I felt naked underneath–which is what I was. I’ve never shown this much skin, and it made me
nervous.
Next to me, Laura looked stunning in her purple halter–neck dress. Her dark brown hair was tied up in a high ponytail, accentuating her sharp jawline and bright green eyes. She looked like a supermodel, and I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. I was so used to seeing her in dungarees and paint all over her that I almost didn’t recognize her.
But it was Sam who really stole the show. Her fiery red hair was curled and tousled, framing her face in a way that made her look like a fiery temptress. The green corset she wore was laced up so tight it gave her incredible cleavage, and I couldn’t help but stare. I cupped my own chest, feeling a little inadequate.
Laura spotted me and laughed.” I don’t compare with Sam either,” she chuckled.
“You guys look amazing; I’d kill for your legs, Jess.” Sam said, striking a pose in front of the mirror. “but at least I got the boobs.”

I rolled my eyes. “I think boobs win,” I teased.
Laura chimed in, her voice husky. “This will do. I’m not looking for Mr. Right. I’m looking for Mr. Right Now for one night only.”
Sam grinned. “That’s champagne talking, and I need more of it…”
I poured us all another glass, emptying the second bottle, and we threw it back like a shot.
“OK. Let’s go.” I breathed.
The Uber pulled to the curb, and we stumbled into the warm night air. The sound of music and laughter drifted through the air. I could do this. I had enough champagne in me to get me through this night.
Josh always made sure I wasn’t invited, and the one time I was – he drove me home the minute I got there. Some bullshit story about protecting me, and I’m better than this. We were both seniors, and he was there – it didn’t make sense.
We stumbled up the driveway, and I was thankful I put on a pair of leather sandals–this driveway in heels would have been impossible. Now that I think about it, snapping an ankle might get me laid, though. The whole damsel in distress thing might. just work.
“I hate these shoes. I hate these shoes.“Sam groaned next to us. She was shorter than us by at least a head, and thus, she opted for a pair of heels, which she regretted right now.
“You can do it, Sam. We’ll get you more alcohol to numb the pain,” Laura offered, and we both linked arms, helping her up

the driveway.
A few guys caught my eye, checking us out as we passed. Laura leaned into me. “What are they staring at? The other girls are wearing the same thing…” I looked around and felt a little self- conscious, but Sam poked us both in the ribs. “You guys look hot. They are staring because you look hot! Now smile and get me to the house, my feet fucking hurt.” Sam reminded us, and I felt a little more relaxed. At least we were blending in, not disappearing in the background.
We pushed our way through the crowd, and I was thankful for the liquid courage we had at the house. So many writhing bodies in one space was a little overwhelming. We reached the porch and spotted people making out and a few girls dancing inside.
“Wow, this is insane,” Laura breathed, her eyes wide.
“I know, right?” Sam exclaimed. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
I nodded in agreement, my heart pounding in my chest. We were really here. We were actually doing it.
