The silence between us stretched, awkward and loaded, as Laura cradled the mug in her hands. She wasn’t saying anything, just looking at me with those eyes–so damn expressive it was like she could see straight through me. I could feel the words hovering in the air, the ones I wanted to say but couldn’t quite find. 

I scratched the back of my neck, glancing at the tea and then back at her. My pulse hammered in my ears, and the longer she stared, the harder it became to breathe. 

“Fuck it,” I muttered under my breath. 

Before I could overthink it, I reached out and plucked the mug from her hands. Her eyes widened in surprise, and a soft gasp slipped from her lips. 

“Hey! I was starting to—” 

But I didn’t let her finish. I turned, dumped the steaming tea into the sink with one swift motion, and slammed the mug down on the counter. 

“It was shit, actually,” I said, my voice rough. 

Laura blinked at me, her lips parting as if to protest, but I didn’t give her the chance. I didn’t have it in me to hold back any longer.

I closed the space between us in two quick strides, my hands finding her waist as I pulled her flush against me. She fit perfectly–right where she belonged–and every possessive nerve ending in my body screamed for her to be closer. 

“Josh-” she started, her voice barely audible.

A low groan rumbled from my chest as she opened up for me, letting me in. My hands slid down her back, skimming over her curves before cupping her ass. I gripped her firmly, lifting her off the ground like she weighed nothing, and set her down on the counter behind her.
