CHAPTER 85
LUKE
“Yeah. We got the phone. No, we didn’t find anything. We’re going to drive up the road and look for anything or maybe see if anyone saw something. Good. Yes.” Josh spoke over the phone while pacing back and forth beside the car.
I wanted to pull out my phone and call my parents, but I waited for Josh to finish up with Sam and the police.
“Okay. They are sending a squad to patrol this area, and they sent out an AMBER alert,” Josh breathed as he checked his phone in the back seat..
“You should call your parents, man,” I said, trying to say it softly, considering the relationship they have.
“I did. They didn’t answer–it’s like midnight in Europe now. I left a message. I’m sure they’ll call back,” Josh said, but I could see the hint of disappointment there. Neither of our parents was going to win any Best Parent Awards any time soon.
“Okay. So we drive?” I said, opening the door, and Josh nodded. “Yes.”
We were driving for a bit when Josh suddenly hit the dashboard. “Stop!” I slammed on the brakes, the tail of my Jeep swerving a little. “What the hell, man?” I breathed, gripping the steering wheel for dear life.
“I swear I just saw someone running in the woods,” Josh said,

and I looked out over the dark patch of forest. We had a national forest between our little town and the city, and it was easy enough to get lost in it. I reversed slowly while Josh surveyed, but there was nothing–just the hum of my Jeep.
“I don’t see anything, man. Let’s go,” I finally said, turning my head back to the road, only to find a girl standing in the headlights.
“Fuck!” I screamed, my heart leaping out of my chest. Josh was out the door so fast I only saw a blur. He was there, catching her just as she dropped. I couldn’t make out her face, but I saw brown hair and a prom dress. Josh looked up, “It’s Laura! Call an ambulance!”
It was Laura; she was unconscious. “I can’t get them off. Get them off,” Josh repeated over and over, trying to undo the ropes binding her wrists behind her back. I pulled out my pocket knife and cut them off. Josh immediately took her hands in his and held her, kissing her all over her face. “Please be okay. Please be okay. I’m so sorry. Just be okay.” He muttered to himself and to Laura over and over.
