Love Began with the First Meeting novel Chapter 1316

Edgar nodded. Then he turned around, held his hand out to Maggie and led her away. Before leaving the private room, he nodded to Mamie by way of farewell. Then they left without saying goodbye to his former comrades-in-arms.

When they silently got in the car, Maggie could sense that Edgar was in quite low spirits. Deep in her heart, she felt very sad too. At the same time, she was curious about something that had been mentioned during the dinner. "Edgar, Mamie's father..."

Edgar stopped the car as soon as he heard Maggie mention Mamie's father. The sudden braking created a loud screeching sound. He abruptly tightened his grip on the steering wheel. The air in the small and quiet space seemed to freeze.

Maggie took a look at Edgar's hands, which had whitened down to the knuckles where they grasped the steering wheel, and then she looked at his face. Seeing that the lines on his face had stiffened, she felt like she was sitting on pins and needles. She could not help but regret asking about that. "If you don't want to talk about him, I, I won't ask again," she said, trying to remedy the situation.

"Beep..." cars horns sounded loudly from outside, a harsh sound this late at night, as they were blocking the road. Edgar came to his senses all of a sudden. After taking a look in the rear-view mirror, he started the car again and drove along the road.

"Mamie's father died because of me," he finally said in a sad but plain tone. "If he didn't die, it would have been me who would have died at that time! He saved my life, and gave his own."

Maggie was astonished to hear this. Her pupils dilated and her breath shortened as her tension rose at the thought of Edgar having almost died. She didn't know how to respond to him or if she should continue the conversation. She almost regretted starting the conversation in the first place at the sight of his sorrow. She should not have asked this question, which had so painfully torn open his past and the scar it had left that had never healed in his heart.

Hearing no response from Maggie, Edgar turned his head to quickly glance at her while driving. Seeing that her eyes were full of remorse, he tried to form a faint smile at the corners of his mouth to console her. "The dead are already gone. What's the most important is how to take good care of the people who are still alive," he said, looking back at the black road ahead of them. "I would be lying if I said that I don't think of what happened in the past or that I don't feel guilty. But I really can't keep my mind in the past."

Edgar said these words in an indifferent tone. Maggie didn't know why, but she felt that he said these words only in order to comfort her. Putting herself in Edgar's boots, if a comrade-in-arms had died for her sake shortly before he could retire from the army, she thought she would never feel at peace again, no matter how many things she did for his family.

However, Maggie didn't allow herself to go on thinking about this issue, because she knew that the more she thought about it, the more Edgar would feel hurt. Of course, she didn't want him to feel pain or unhappiness. Therefore, she gently shifted the topic of conversation.
