Chapter 104 Punishing Joseph to Warn Her? Damien lit a cigarette and sat down on the sofa in the bedroom. He appraised Clarissa, who was deep in thought. “What are you thinking about?”
“Oh, it’s nothing,” she said. ‘Joseph didn’t seem to be lying. Who’s the one who actually bought the clothes?’ At this moment, the doorbell rang. The housekeeper opened the door, and a voice rang out, seemingly coming closer to them.” President Lawrence, President Lawrence…!”
This scared Clarissa. It was Joseph. Anxiety coursed through her veins, and she immediately recalled how Joseph had burst into their home the last time.
“Should I step aside?” she asked Damien, looking awkward.
“Is there anything between the two of you? Why do you need to step aside?” Damien said calmly. His eyes were icy, though. “I…” She didn’t know what Joseph was here for, and whether it had anything to do with the clothes.
Joseph ran into the bedroom. He spared Clarissa a glance, then knelt before Damien, falling to his knees with a loud thump.
That gave Clarissa a shock
“President Lawrence, please! Let my father go. He’s already past sixty, and he can’t take something like this. If you really want to do something, target me instead!” Joseph begged.
‘Joseph’s father… Frank Moore? What’s going on?’ Clarissa was puzzled.
“You want to pay off your father’s debts? I’m not interested in that.” Damien crossed his legs, speaking slowly. He was doing this to make Joseph suffer. “I know I’m your true target. I asked my father about it, and he’s scared out of his wits. The public prosecutor’s office is on his tail, and if he’s found guilty, he could be facing twenty years in prison. He’s not in good health, and I don’t know whether he’ll make it out alive…” Joseph had his hands on Damien’s knees. His head was bowed, and he was crying
“You’re overthinking this, Damien said.
“It’s all my fault, President Lawrence. I shouldn’t have bought clothes for Clarissa… I mean, Mrs. Lawrence. It’s just… I really like her. I know it’s because of this…” Joseph started listing his mistakes.
“You bought clothes?” Damien seemed to be puzzled. “What clothes?”
He wanted to look at Clarissa when he walked past her, but he didn’t have the courage to do so.
Throughout the whole debacle, Damien had remained calm and gentle. Yet, Clarissa couldn’t help feeling cold. Her breathing raced. It was as if everything was within Damien’s grasp, and she didn’t know what was wrong
She only managed to force out a smile long after Joseph had left. It was extremely stiff and awkward.
“H-Hubby, was it all just a misunderstanding?” she asked.
“Yeah, it was. I never expected him to be the cause of this.” Damien pulled out his lighter to light another cigarette, Clarissa leaned close to him eagerly and took the lighter. “Allow me.”
Her hands trembled as she lit Damien’s cigarette. Perhaps it was because to her, Joseph was considered quite a big shot in Genovia, yet he had kneeled down before Damien and listed down the things he had done. She, on the other hand, was a nobody. Wouldn’t she just be courting death by trying to pull something funny to Damien’s face? What exactly was Damien trying to achieve? Had he been punishing Joseph as a warning to her? If she dared to have anything to do with Joseph in the future, she would be the one begging for mercy!
