Damien went back to Genovia the very next day as Clarissa was worried about Neil being on his own.
She had a class on Wednesday.
Halfway through the class, Mr. Dwight summoned her.
“Miss Johnson, your posting to Genovia just came through. You need to sign this so I can fax it to them. The university’s taking care of the rest of the procedures.” He then pulled out a few documents.
Clarissa was lost.
“What posting?”
“Oh, you’re being posted at the University of Genovia as a lecturer, and it’s going to be approved soon. You can start teaching the moment you get there,” Mr. Dwight said amicably.
“I didn’t ask to be transferred to the University of Genovia, though.” She was beside herself with surprise. She liked being at the University of Florin, as it was where Grandpa Lawrence had once taught. Why would she suddenly want to go to the University of Genovia?
“Well, that’s information that I’m not privy to. All I know is I’m supposed to handle the procedures for you. You can leave the University of Florin and report at the University of Genovia by tomorrow.”
“What?” Didn’t this mean that she was basically being kicked out of the University of Florin?
Was this Damien’s doing?
“Hurry up, Miss Johnson. Aren’t you happy that you’ll be able to go back to your hometown?” Mr. Dwight was full of smiles. He seemed to be genuinely happy for her.
Despite her confusion and the vague sense that she’d been played, Clarissa still signed the documents.
She was a little absent-minded, but she still finished her lecture.
After class, she sent Damien a WhatsApp message.
Clarissa: [Why am I being transferred from the University of Florin to the University of Genovia? Don’t things like these normally take at least half a year?]
Damien: [Oh, that. I donated a building to the University of Genovia.]
Clarissa was speechless.
Most of the people on campus didn’t know that she was transferring to the University of Genovia as it had happened on such short notice. The first people to find out were Rem and Lisa. After all, they were her students.
They made a trip to Clarissa’s place.
“Miss Johnson, I can’t believe you’re leaving just like this! Who knows who’s going to guide us from here?” Lisa was surprised and understandably upset
“Isn’t it all the same?” Clarissa had yet to get over her shock, but she couldn’t show it in front of her students. She had to comfort them, regardless of her own feelings.
“Of course not! All the other professors in our faculty are rather old, and it’s hard to get along with them.”
Clarissa patted her on the shoulder. “It’s all my fault.”
Lisa lowered her voice and said in a secretive whisper, “Miss Johnson, does this sudden transfer have anything to do with Professor Kirk? We heard she went to your workplace and threatened to jump off the building. I’d be pissed off if I were in your shoes! It’s a good thing your husband has the means to get you out of here.”
Clarissa didn’t say anything.
