Chapter 37

After getting over the initial shock, Irvin looked hurt.

Emihe barely managed to get the word out before his body collapsed to the side wealdy.

I watched him fall coldly, feeling nothing at all.

Darkness crept around the edges of Irvin’s vision, threatening to swallow him into oblivion. Everything was blurry around him. The only thing he could see clearly was me.

I used to love him more than anything in the world, but now, I was just watching coldly as he collapsed. Then, without hesitation, without even the slightest reluctance, I walked away without looking back.

It felt as though his heart was being slowly and painfully carved away with a dull knife. Overwhelmed by pain, he lost consciousness.

Unconscious, Irvin dreameda terrifying nightmare. He dreamed that I, who had once loved him, was looking at him with utter indifference.

In his nightmare, he was utterly irrelevant to me. He could die right then and there, and he felt that I wouldn’t care one bit. In fact, I would simply step over him and leave.

When he woke up, his chest was tight with anxiety. Instinctively, he called out for me, yearning to hold me.

But no one answered.

Irvin opened his eyes again and found himself staring at the white ceiling of the hospital. He realized that his nightmare was real.

I had really looked at him with coldness and indifference as he collapsed. I had walked away, showing no concern whatsoever for his wellbeing.

Irvin sat up and leaned against the headboard.

The morning sunlight streamed through the window, casting a halo around him. Wearing just a white shirt, he looked beautiful in a weak, sickly way.

The nurse who came in to deliver his medication couldn’t stop her heart from skipping a few beats at the sight.

Just the day before, she had been utterly terrified of him. But now, all she felt was pity.

She wondered how could such a handsome man have a wife who refused to see him when he was hospitalized, especially one who would knock him unconscious.

The universe was fair, in a way, but more often than not, beautiful people tended to attract sympathy and undue favor. Most people would overlook their faults in favor of their

appearance.

But just as the nurse was about to say something, Julianne swept into the room, a waft of perfume trailing after her.

Irvin, are you okay? Where does it hurt? How did you end up in the hospital?

Julianne rushed over, holding on to Irvin’s arm anxiously. Her redrimmed eyes were brimming with tears.
