I trusted him, and his words brought me comfort.

“Let it go. He isn’t in good shape right now.” 

“Jeffrey, the Baltons are under my control now, and I decide how it’s run.” 

He set his chopsticks aside, saying, “I’m finished. Enjoy your meal.” 

As Jeffrey glared at him angrily. Carter shifted his gaze to me. “Would you like to see his current state?” 

Luke’s aggressive face flashed through my mind, a reminder of when he tried to force himself on me. Carter seemed determined to show me he was fair.
