I looked up at the figure standing in front of me. He was dressed in a sharp, well-fitted suit, looking impeccable and striking—yet it wasn't Carter. It was Luke.
He was wearing the same suit from our previous wedding, and his presence, though unexpected, felt oddly familiar.
Luke stepped forward, placing himself between me and Wisteria. As he did, he took the blow from the knife that Wisteria had aimed at me. The blade sliced through his hand, and blood began to pour down his wrist, staining the air with an eerie sight.
I could hardly believe what was unfolding before me.
Luke looked at me with a gentle smile, his eyes meeting mine as he spoke. "Chloe, this time, I made it."
He didn't call me "Zoey" as he had before. Instead, he used the name that always filled me with warmth.
Wisteria, visibly shocked by his sudden appearance, gasped in disbelief. "Luke, is that really you?"
She yanked the knife from Luke's hand, another spray of blood splattering in the process.
Luke stood tall, positioning himself protectively in front of me. "Chloe, don't be afraid."
"How did you get here? Did you contact Carter?" I asked, trying to stay composed.
"I was worried someone might try to ruin everything, so I've been keeping an eye on you. When I saw you get in the car with her, I followed. Uncle Carter and the others are on their way from the hotel, but it'll be a few minutes—five, maybe ten."
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, feeling a wave of relief wash over me.
Wisteria had been confident that everything was under control, with Eleanor secretly diverting Carter's people. What she hadn't counted on was Luke's arrival.
He wasn't going to follow Eleanor's commands.
Besides Wisteria, the only other person present was the maid, who had already shown her strength in the past.
As soon as Luke appeared, she pulled out a gun and aimed it directly at him.
"Ms. Carlyn, step back," the maid commanded.
My heart raced, and I shouted, "Luke, get out of the way!"
But Luke didn't flinch. Instead, he grabbed Wisteria's wrist with one hand, yanking the knife from her grip.
He pulled her close to him, pinning her with one hand around her throat, and the maid froze, clearly unwilling to make a move.
Wisteria tried her usual manipulation, her voice taking on a pained tone. "Luke, it hurts ... "
Her voice was like a haunting memory—a nightmare from my past life that once terrified me.
Back then, her tricks had always worked. But now, Luke had her under control. Her wrist was locked in his grip, and her throat was firmly held in place.
"Wisteria, do you really think I'm going to fall for your games again? After so long, I've finally caught up with you."
"Let go of her!" the maid pleaded in panic.
Luke's voice was cold as he sneered. "Then put your gun down. If you don't, I'll strangle her."
The maid hesitated before reluctantly lowering her weapon. "It's down."
"Good. Now, kick it over to me. Don't try anything," Luke ordered.
The maid did as she was told, and Wisteria, no longer pretending to be helpless, looked at Luke with a cold smile.
