Ever since Anna returned, Taylor had noticed that she had been unusually quiet. To keep her safe, he moved her to a more secure location.
She sat by the terrace, gazing silently at the horizon. Taylor had been sitting beside her for a while, yet she hadn't even noticed.
"What's on your mind?"
His sudden voice startled Anna. "Taylor, when did you get here?"
Taylor reached out and gently ruffled her hair. "Something bothering you?"
He had raised Anna himself. No one in the world knew her better than he did.
Anna bit her lip and hesitated. "Taylor, I miss home. Can you ... "
Before she could finish, Taylor interrupted her with a firm refusal. "Anna, I'm sorry. I can't agree to that."
She grabbed his wrist, refusing to let go. "Back then, Wisteria claimed my name as her own. She would take my place and return to the Sanders, wouldn't she?"
"Anna, calm down." Taylor hadn't expected her to remember something from when she was only five. And just from that single sentence, she had already pieced things together.
"Taylor, just tell me. If you don't, this will keep eating away at me."
Seeing her so agitated, Taylor felt uneasy as well. He sighed and finally spoke. "Don't worry. She still has other matters to handle. It'll be at least another year or two. For now, the Sanders are safe."
"One or two years," Anna murmured.
For years, she had prayed that this day would never come. But now, it felt like it was drawing closer with every second.
"Alright, be good. If your family knew about your condition, they would want you to take care of yourself, wouldn't they?"
Anna nodded. She needed a heart transplant. She had to survive. Only then could she save the Sanders.
After that, she cooperated fully until the day of the surgery arrived. Taylor blindfolded her with a piece of cloth.
"Taylor, where are you taking me?"
"To the surgery. We're almost there. Don't be afraid."
Memories of the operating room she had seen when she was five resurfaced. Was he really going to perform her surgery there?
As she grew older, Anna became more confident that what she had witnessed back then was an illegal organ trade. And now, was the heart she was about to receive coming from the same source?
Her emotions were in turmoil. On one hand, she desperately wanted to live and save the Sanders. On the other hand, the thought that her new heart might come at the cost of someone else's life gnawed at her conscience.
