Chapter 106 

I obediently stopped moving, but I also hugged Brandon tighter. 

I could hear the strong, steady thumping of his heartbeat. Only then did I realize that I was lying on his chest. However, I couldn’t care less because I was too afraid. 

My arms were practically squeezing him. This was the only way I could steady myself, making sure only the elevator was swaying. 

After a while, I felt that the elevator had stopped swaying. I also forgot to let go of Brandon until he said, “Is that your new colleague?” 

I quickly pushed myself out of his embrace and looked down. 

What I saw shocked me! Moreover, rage started to burn inside me as I pressed the down button to descend. 

When I reached the lower ground, Jewel smiled at me with her signature simpering smile as she called out, “Ms. Crown.” 

I wasn’t as pleasant as her as I barked, “What are you doing here?” 

I didn’t want to be rude, but as a pregnant woman, it was unsafe for her to be here. Besides, this place wasn’t open to the public, and many things hadn’t cleared the safety checks yet. If anything untoward happened, the 

responsibility was too great to bear for any party! 

Besides, her unborn child was an orphan, which was even more precious. 

However, her reply left me dumbfounded, 

She said, “I’m here to work.” 

I could hardly believe my ears. “What did you say?” 

“Mr. Chris wanted me to come here and oversee the safety checks.” 

I nearly exploded upon hearing that. “Chris must be out of his mind! Are you telling me that he wanted you to follow up with the safety checks?” 

My velling caught the attention of others. Jewel wasn’t here alone. She was also with the project’s manager. Kara and Conrad were also here before Jewel

“What do you mean, Ms. Crown?” Jewel looked wronged and uncomfortable. 

“I mean, as a pregnant woman, it’s not appropriate for you to be here.” While saying this, I whipped out my phone and called Chris. 

He didn’t answer my call for a long while, and I started to wonder if he was ignoring me on purpose. 

He finally answered the call when it was about to drop. “Ms. Crown, what’s the matter?‘ 

I asked, “Why did you send Jewel here?” 

I was asking him from a professional standpoint and had no other personal intentions. I always dared to say what was on my mind. 

“She’s there for work. Didn’t she tell you? Chris said nonchalantly. 

I looked at Jewel, then asked Chris, “Is it appropriate for her to work here? Who’s going to be responsible if anything happens to her?” 

“That would be you, of course.” 

My jaw dropped. 

Without waiting for my reply, he continued, “Madeline, you’re the person in charge of the amusement park project.
