Bree placed her utensils down and looked at me. “Yes. Your father 

was even ready to sign the contract. The same contract I found in 

my dad’s notebook. 

“And he didn’t get to sign it because of the accident?” I asked with a shaky voice. 

She nodded. At that moment, I could feel my anxiety surging. Then, Bree sighed. 

“That contract was the first one your father and Zack had when they started their business.” 

What? Zack had a copy of that contract? Things weren’t as I thought. 

“Your father and Zack were so intent on working with Arthur Griffins from Alpha Corporation that they did everything he asked. They went fishing, raced cars, and he even asked them to skydive with him,” Bree said, shaking her head. 

“Arthur had an underworld background and loved messing with 

people. Since they desperately wanted his support, they risked their lives playing his games… 

“One time, he took them out to the sea for fishing and encountered a hurricane. Only two life jackets were on the boat, and your father and Zack wanted to sacrifice their life jackets for each other. 

“Since then, Arthur no longer gave them a hard time and agreed to assign them the contract. Since your father knew the ins and outs of contracts more than Zack did, Zack told your father to review the contract to ensure there were no tricks or issues. 

“Your father did eventually detect faults in the contract. As such, Arthur had someone draft a new contract and told them to sign it. 

Who knew… your father encountered a car crash on his way to sign it, 

Bree retold the story in excruciating detail, and I could almost 

visualize myself with them. 

So that was the truth. It wasn’t the version I dreaded, which was enough.
