It seemed she knew how serious her condition was. She was aware that if the surgery were successful, it would be a new chance for her. If it failed, everything she was experiencing now would only become a memory. 

“You’ll have plenty of time to live this kind of life in the future,” I said, nudging her gently with my head. Trust me.” 

“Maddie, Bran can be really stubborn and not great with words. Please don’t get upset with him,” Ellie suddenly said with a hint of emotion. 

I thought she was worried about the surgery, and I was just about to comfort her when she continued, “I know you’ve been purposely punishing him these past few days, right?” 

Her words made me a bit embarrassed, so I poked her playfully. “Kid, where do you get all these ideas? 

Don’t overthink it.” 

“Maddie, don’t be fooled by my age. I’ve read a ton of romance novels. I get it. I understand everything,” she said with a confident smile. 

I didn’t deny it anymore. “Yeah, he was being too stubborn, so I let him deal with the consequences. 

Besides, he has been a bachelor for over 30 years. What’s a few days? You don’t need to feel sorry for him. 

“He’s my brother. He’d give his life for me. How can I not feel sorry for him?” Ellie said while taking a lick 

of her ice cream. “He’s the best brother in the world, and he’s also the best man.” 

Her words hit me right in the heart, and I almost teared up. “I’ll take good care of him.” 

“Yes, I believe you. I knew it from the moment I first saw you.” Her praise caught me off guard. 

“Alright, don’t overthink things then. Focus on getting better. Once you’re healthy, the two of us can spoil him together and make him the happiest brother in the world,” I encouraged her. 

“Okay. Let’s make a pinky promise,” Ellie said while holding out her hand to me. 

“You really are just a kid.” I laughed, linking my pinky with hers. 

She insisted on going to the hospital, and neither Brandon nor I could change her mind, so we took her there.
