Chapter 68
Brandon quickly walked over to me. He looked at me with a casual, open gaze and said, “Let’s go.”
What?
Wasn’t he going to explain why he wanted to stay in a room so close to mine?
I was going to ask him, but I felt like asking would only make things weirder.
“Mr. Howell, why are you so close to our room?” Kara asked. Sometimes her straightforwardness came as a good thing because she could ask what I was too nervous to.
He walked to the elevator and pressed the button. I saw his room card with the number “308” on it. That was the room next to mine.
“For convenience,” he said simply.
Convenient for what?
It was easy to misunderstand his answer
Kara was confused as well. She looked at me and then looked at him and
asked, “Mr. Howell, what sort of convenience are you talking about?*
I wanted to smash her bead in. Why was she asking so many questions?
The elevator doors were polished and shiny enough for us to see our reflections. I looked at Brandon through the reflection of the door and he looked up at me as well.
Our gazes met. I met his
gaze without avoiding anything, but he looked away
after just a quick glance. “For anything,” he replied Kara.
I fell silent and so did Kara.
Even she remained quiet. She simply tugged at the corner of my shirt.
I felt like Brandon had finally managed to shut her up.
The elevator reached the third floor soon enough, so we walked out and went to our respective rooms. Before we entered, Kara said excitedly to Brandon,” Mr. Howell, feel free to call me if you need anything!”
“Okay,” Brandon said before entering his room.
The moment I walked in, Kara approached me and asked, “What’s Mr. Howell getting up to? What sort of ideas is he getting to want to stay so close to us? What if he’s secretly a pervert under that handsome disguise? What if he wants to do… you know what!”
I was surprised she would even think about protecting herself after letting her lust take over her common sense.
However, even though those thoughts would be able to stop her from being so obsessed with him, I didn’t want it to affect her work. I cut her off and said firmly, “He’s not like that.”
She blinked. “How do you know?”
I regretted being so straightforward when she reminded me yet again of how curious she was. I decided to keep my mouth shut around Kara from then onwards, or I would be spending most of my time explaining myself.
“I guessed. I could be wrong, of course. You’re free to test that theory out,” I said teasingly.
Kara’s eyes gleamed. “Can I? I wouldn’t mind, actually.”
I had reached the sofa, so I picked up a pillow and threw it at her.
Kara cried out as I entered the room, put my suitcase down, and entered the bathroom.
I took my clothes off and stepped into the shower. I suddenly remembered something a few minutes into my shower and looked down at my waist.
I saw a large bruise that was streaked with a purple mark right where I had run into the edge of the appliance. I was already quite pale, so the bruise stood out even more against my skin.
I gently caressed it and couldn’t help but remember Brandon suddenly grabbing me to stop my fall.
The image only flashed in my head for a second. I squeezed my eyes shut and forced myself not to think of anything else.
Before I could finish showering, Kara called out, “Maddie, your phone is ringing.
I turned the shower head off. “Who is it?”
“I don’t know. It’s an unsaved number.”
