Chapter 69
“Yes.”
That was his only reply before he hung up.
He was now the most important person when it came to solving our lighting problems. He was basically our a benefactor now, so I couldn’t piss him off.
Thus, I put a jacket on over my pajamas and went to knock on his door.
When he opened the door and saw my wet hair, he swallowed hard.
“Does it still hurt?” he asked.
Those four words weren’t enough for me to understand what he was talking about. I asked back, “What?”
He looked down at my waist, and I immediately caught on.
For some reason, my heart skipped a beat. “Oh. I’m fine.”
“Wait here,” he said before turning around and leaving me to stand in his doorway, alone.
I looked into his room through the open door. I immediately saw the laptop on
I the desk. It seemed like he had already started to work while I was showering.
Not bad. That was an impressive show of professionalism.
He walked over. His tall figure blocked everything behind him, so I looked at him instead. I noticed he was wearing the same outfit from before, but his T- shirt was tucked into his waistband, which made his legs look even longer.
He practically looked like a model on the runway.
I could understand why Kara was so intrigued. Loving beauty was human nature. Who wouldn’t enjoy looking at a work of art?
“Take this and apply it to your bruise. It’s good for getting rid of bruises.” He passed me a small container of some sort of ointment.
I took it from him and said, “Thanks.”
“If it hurts really badly, you should see a doctor,” he said.
Both the ointment and the reminder made me wonder if he cared about me.
The moment that thought flashed in my head, I heard him say, “I don’t want anyone to delay our progress due to injuries and such once we officially start working.”
I fell silent.
So, he didn’t care about me. He just didn’t want me to delay our work.
I scoffed inwardly at myself for being so hopelessly romantic and smiled.” Don’t worry, Mr. Howell. I probably want this job to end more than you do.”
After all, that meant I no longer had to meet him any more. The sooner I finished the project and handed things over to Chris, the less I had to see of Brandon.
“Thanks for this,” I said as I held up the ointment. After that, I turned around and walked back to my room.
I tossed the ointment on the bed and let out a huge sigh.
For some reason, I felt moody and down in the dumps. Kara had finished her shower and was wrapped up in a robe as she leaped onto the bed like some sort of professional diver.
The very second she made contact with the bed, she let out a yelp. “Ouch! What’s this?”
She found the ointment and looked at it closely. “Where did this come from? Is this yours, Maddie?”
“Who else would it belong to?” I said before reaching out and taking it.
“Why do you have this? Are you hurt?” I wanted to laugh at Kara’s question.
Hadn’t she personally witnessed me falling over?
It seemed like she had only paid attention to the moment Brandon had held me in his arms. She hadn’t noticed that I had bumped into anything.
As for Brandon, he had given me the ointment because he had paid attention to the fact that I was injured.
I suddenly felt like my thoughts were a mess. I closed my eyes and forced
