Chapter 90
I was so embarrassed I wanted to hide. But I knew if I tried to deflect, Brandon
would overthink it.
Not to mention, he was acting so casual and familiar with me. He did whatever he pleased and said whatever came to mind without mincing words.
I forced myself to look up naturally at that thought. “Is that so? You can’t just claim something without proof.”
“It’s true.” Brandon took a sip of his drink before continuing, “I can-”
Alarms started going off in my head. “Shut up, Brandon.” I had lost in the end.
“I was just going to say that I can get checked at the hospital if you need proof,
“Brandon finished.
Even though his words weren’t inappropriate, they still made me overthink things. Why did he have to prove himself? I wasn’t even anything to him.
“Just prove it to your future wife,” I said before getting up and escaping to the
restroom.
However, as soon as I made a turn, someone grabbed my arm. A familiar scent greeted me, and I knew who it was without even looking.
Clutching my arm, Chris questioned. “Madeline, aren’t you going too far? You’re having lunch with a mere lighting technician in a place like this?”
Noticing Chris‘ angry expression, I chuckled. He was clearly jealous. “Can’t we eat here? Did you reserve the entire place?”
“Madeline.” Brandon was getting increasingly frustrated. “If you’re looking for a
at least find a decent one.”

Earlier, and even now, his every word belittled Brandon. It was also his way of mocking me.
“Brandon is a senior engineer with a dual degree from Cambridge. Do you possess any of the qualifications he has?” I countered mockingly.

It was something I had learned this morning when I went through Brandon’s
files.
Chris was embarrassed by my question. Despite being the president, his academic performance was far from stellar. He couldn’t even compare to Conrad in this regard.
However, Chris was shrewd, which was an essential quality to be a successful businessman. He inherited his father’s company and, in just a few years,
turned it into an industry leader.
It was undeniably true that everyone had their strengths and weaknesses. But Chris was too proud. He only saw his success and failed to see anyone else’s
talents.
“Madeline, am I such a disappointment to you?” Chris‘ face was flushed with
anger.
“You’re not a disappointment.” I didn’t completely tear him down. After all, I had loved him for ten years. If I had loved him even when he was a disappointment, it would be a question of my judgment.
“But you’re not better than Brandon.” Since he looked down on Brandon, I used Brandon to deflate his ego.
Chris tightened his grip on my arm. He was nearly crushing me, yet he had been gentle with Jewel just moments ago.
A sharp pain pierced through my heart. “Chris, like I said, we have nothing to do with each other anymore. Who I have dinner with and what I do is none of your
business.”
