Chapter 13
The early morning sunlight poured through the thin curtains of the cottage, casting faint patterns on the wooden floor. Aurora stirred awake, the heaviness of the past day still lingering in her chest. She lay in bed for a moment, staring at the ceiling, trying to gather her thoughts. It wasn’t home, but the quiet comfort of the cottage was better than she had dared to hope for.
Her mother was already awake, humming softly in the corner as she prepared tea. The scent of herbs filled the small space, soothing Aurora as she sat up.
“Good morning,” Lila said warmly, glancing over her shoulder. “Did you sleep well?”
“As well as I could,” Aurora replied, brushing her hair out of her face. She hesitated before adding, “Do you think we’re safe here?”
Lila poured the tea and carried a cup to Aurora, her expression thoughtful. “Safer than we were before,” she said. “But trust is earned, not given. We’ll have to prove ourselves if we want to stay.”
Aurora nodded, sipping the tea and letting its warmth spread through her. Her mother was right, of course. They couldn’t expect kindness to come without conditions—not in the world they lived in. But as she remembered Cassian’s calm, measured gaze, she felt a flicker of hope. This pack seemed different, and maybe its Alpha was, too.
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Aurora’s heart skipped, and she exchanged a glance with her mother before setting her cup down and answering. A young wolf stood on the porch, his posture respectful but guarded.
