Chapter 26
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the pack grounds as the wolves prepared for night patrols. Aurora sat by the cottage window, her hands resting protectively over her abdomen. The twins had been more active today, their movements gentle but constant, as if responding to her growing unease.
Lila entered the room, carrying a steaming cup of tea. “It’s chamomile,” she said softly. “It’ll help you relax.”
Aurora took the cup with a grateful smile, though she didn’t drink right away. “Do you think he’s really out there?” she asked, her voice trembling.
Lila sat beside her, her expression calm but serious. “If Fenrir is near, it’s because he knows you’re here. But Cassian’s pack is strong, Aurora. They won’t let him take you without a fight.”
Aurora’s chest tightened at the thought of Cassian risking himself for her. “I don’t want this,” she whispered. “I don’t want them to suffer because of me.”
“They won’t see it that way,” Lila said firmly. “You’ve earned their respect, whether you realize it or not. This pack doesn’t just protect its own—they fight for them.”
Aurora nodded, though her heart still felt heavy.
At the northern border, Cassian stood with Nathan and a group of senior wolves, their eyes scanning the dark forest. The scent of strangers hung in the air, faint but unmistakable.
“They’re holding their position,” Nathan said, his voice low.
“For now,” Cassian replied. “But it won’t last. Fenrir isn’t the type to sit back and wait.”
