Chapter 278
Dain sat slumped against a tree at the edge of the forest, blood streaking his torn shirt. His breaths came heavy and uneven, each inhale laced with pain. His orange eyes burned with a feral intensity as he clutched a scrap of Elyra’s dress in his hand. The fabric was faintly torn and dirtied, but it shimmered softly with a trace of her energy.
“She’s close,” he muttered under his breath, his voice hoarse but resolute.
Every muscle in his body ached, but the thought of Elyra—terrified and in Jason’s clutches—spurred him onward. The forest around him was dark, its thick canopy blocking out the stars. Yet Dain’s sharp senses caught every sound, every subtle movement, as if the night itself were leading him to her.
“You’ve been leaving me signs,” he whispered, his fingers tightening around the fabric. “I’ll find you. Just hold on.”
Rising to his feet with a wince, Dain surveyed his surroundings. The faint glow of her energy lingered on the trees, guiding him like a trail of breadcrumbs. He moved with a predator’s precision, silent but relentless.
