Chapter 298

The fire cast dim, flickering shadows across the forest clearing as Elyra and Dain sat close, their breaths visible in the cool night air. The tension between them had grown unbearable in the days since the revelation of their true connection—or lack thereof. What once tethered them as siblings now felt like a fragile excuse, shattered by truth and eclipsed by the emotions they could no longer suppress.

Elyra’s fingers played absently with the chain of her pendant, her silver hair gleaming faintly in the firelight. She avoided Dain’s gaze, her voice low and strained. “Everything feels different now. Like I don’t even know who I’m supposed to be anymore.”

Dain shifted closer, his posture guarded yet intent. “You’re still you,” he said, his voice steady but heavy with meaning. “You’ve always been Elyra, and you always will be. That doesn’t change.”

She glanced at him, her golden eyes wide and uncertain. “Then why does everything feel like it’s falling apart?”

“It’s not falling apart,” he said, his gaze unwavering. “It’s falling into place.”

Elyra felt her heart skip, his words hitting deeper than she expected. She knew what he meant, and the weight of it scared her.

“Dain, we can’t—” she started, but he interrupted her, his tone softer than she’d ever heard.

“Tell me I’m wrong,” he murmured, leaning slightly closer. “Tell me you don’t feel it too.”

She hesitated, her breath catching. Every fiber of her being screamed to deny it, to maintain the careful distance they’d kept for so long. But when she looked into his orange eyes, so intense and filled with an emotion she didn’t dare name, her resolve crumbled.

“I can’t,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
