Chapter 333
Elyra sat cross-legged in the center of the training chamber, her breathing slow and measured. The shard hovered before her, its light oscillating between silver and shadowy gray. Althea stood nearby, her watchful gaze unwavering as she instructed.
“Focus, Elyra,” Althea said, her voice calm but firm. “You must draw from its energy without letting it consume you. The shard will test you, but you are stronger than its pull.”
Elyra closed her eyes, steadying herself as she reached out to the shard’s power. Warmth radiated through her fingertips, and a gentle hum vibrated through the air. For a fleeting moment, the energy felt like an extension of herself, a natural current she could command.
But then it shifted.
A searing heat jolted through Elyra, and the visions returned—visions of Dain, clad in black armor, leading an army of shadow wolves that blotted out the moonlight. His expression was fierce, his once-familiar eyes cold and distant. Around him, destruction reigned, with packs scattering in fear.
“No!” Elyra gasped, her connection to the shard shattering as she flinched. The shard’s glow dimmed, falling lifelessly to the floor.
Althea knelt beside her, her tone both stern and compassionate. “You cannot let fear dictate your bond with the shard. Fear invites chaos, and chaos will destroy you.”
Elyra’s breaths came in short bursts as she clutched her head, the haunting images lingering. “I keep seeing him like this,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Dain leading them into darkness. What if I’m too late to save him?”
Althea’s eyes softened, but her words were firm. “The visions are warnings, Elyra, not certainties. But every choice he makes pulls you closer to your own fall. You must remain grounded, or his descent will drag you down with him.”
Elyra blinked back tears, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “Then why am I even fighting this? If his choices affect mine, what hope do I have of stopping him? Of saving him?”
“Because you are stronger than the darkness,” Althea replied, her tone resolute. “Your bond is powerful, but it is not unbreakable. The shard shows you what could be, not what must be. Do not let it define your path.”
Elyra wiped her face and stood, squaring her shoulders. “I’ll try again.”
Althea nodded approvingly, stepping back to observe. “Good. This time, focus on your light. Do not push the darkness away—balance it. The shard responds to equilibrium, not opposition.”
Elyra steadied herself, taking a deep breath as she extended her hand toward the shard. It floated upward, its light flickering once more between silver and shadow. She concentrated on her connection to Dain, remembering not the darkness of her visions but the warmth of their bond—the brother who had fought beside her, laughed with her, and protected her when no one else could.
