Chapter 38
The tension in the pack was suffocating by the time Aurora, Cassian, and Lila returned to the central grounds. Wolves moved with purpose, their gazes sharp and their bodies brimming with anticipation. The aftermath of Fenrir’s and Arianna’s advances had left everyone on edge, but the pack was still standing, ready to defend what they held dear.
Cassian led Aurora and Lila toward the main hall, his expression unreadable. Despite his calm exterior, Aurora could sense the storm brewing beneath the surface.
Inside the hall, Nathan was waiting. He straightened as they entered, his sharp eyes scanning Aurora and Lila before settling on Cassian. “The wolves from the western patrols held their ground, but we’re stretched thin,” Nathan reported. “Fenrir hasn’t retreated, and Arianna’s disappearance complicates things. She’s still out there.”
Cassian nodded, his jaw tight. “Fortify the southern perimeter. If Fenrir’s regrouping, that’s the most vulnerable point.”
Nathan hesitated. “And Aurora?”
Cassian glanced at her, his expression softening slightly. “She stays in the main hall. She’s safest here.”
Aurora bristled, stepping forward. “I can’t just sit here while the pack fights to protect me,” she said, her voice trembling with frustration.
Cassian turned to her, his gaze steady but firm. “You’re not just protecting yourself, Aurora. You’re protecting your children. Staying here isn’t weakness—it’s strategy.”
His words silenced her protests, though the tension in her chest didn’t ease.
Hours passed, and the pack remained on high alert. Aurora stayed in the main hall, pacing near the long table where Lila sat quietly. The room was filled with a quiet hum of activity as scouts came and went, delivering reports to Cassian and his senior wolves.
Nathan entered briskly, his face set in a grim mask. “Alpha, Fenrir’s forces have split again. Smaller groups are testing the borders, but they’re holding back from direct confrontation.”
“He’s trying to exhaust us,” Cassian said, his tone calm but laced with frustration.
