However, Zachary told Serenity that after Titus’s enemies harmed his family, they took over the business of the Labbe family but couldn’t fully occupy it or mobilize the real elite forces of the family. 
This was because they did not have the family totem, the token, or the seal of the head of the family—critical symbols of authority. These items were in the possession of the old doctor, entrusted to him by Jane, who had handed them over to several respected elders for safekeeping. 
The elders, part of the older generation of the Five Emperors Hall, had long retired from public life. Few people even remembered their existence, and even fewer knew the location of their stronghold. Trusting the old doctor to safeguard the items was far safer than leaving them at FC Manor.

“Yes, we didn’t have a chance to meet again after the children went on winter vacation. After more than a month, Mrs. York, you’re still as charming as ever,” Carrie said, her eyes landing on Serenity’s growing belly. “Mrs. York, are you going to give birth soon?” 
“It will take another three months,” Serenity replied. Her due date was still three months away, though it could be earlier or later. She remembered how her sister had experienced a similar situation with Sonny, who had arrived a week later than expected. 
“Mrs. York, when you give birth, can you invite me to drink the full moon wine when the baby is one month old to share in the joy? I was pregnant last time, but I accidentally miscarried.” 
Carrie’s tone grew somber, her expression clouded with a trace of loneliness. 
Her mind seemed to drift as she spoke about her lost child. The first time she had been pregnant, the baby wasn’t fully formed, and the child’s father had insisted she terminate the pregnancy. 
Carrie didn’t love Mr. Labbe, and she knew he didn’t love her either. To him, she was nothing more than a pawn. In Wiltspoon, she bore the title of “Mrs. Labbe,” but in reality, she was just one of many women in his life. 
It had been a long time since Mr. Labbe had come to see her.
