She was already here, but not as the hostess of this house.
Adam had wanted to say it like that, but he did not. Instead, he said, “Soon.”
Marie said, “That’s good, that’s good. You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for the hostess of this house. I thought I might never see her in my lifetime, but finally, she’s coming.”
Marie had watched Adam grow up and always treated him like her own child. She knew that Adam had been alone for all these years and had to bear everything alone, with no one by his side who would care for him.
Now, finally, the person who would always be there for Adam had arrived. Marie couldn’t be happier.
Marie’s tears flowed down as she spoke. Adam said, “This is a good thing. Why are you crying?”
“I’m crying with joy. I’m happy for you.” Marie wiped her tears. “I really want to see Mrs. Hills as soon as possible. I want to see what she looks like. I want…”
After Adam grew up, Marie hadn’t talked so much to him in a long time. Adam could tell that Marie, like his grandmother Catherine, sincerely wished for his marriage to be happy.
Adam also treated Marie as an elder. Besides Catherine, Marie was probably the elder he was closest to. “You’ve already seen her.”
Marie’s reaction was the same as Judy’s. She opened her mouth wide, and her eyes widened.
“When?”
Adam glanced at the second floor. “Lumma is my wife.”
“I know that.” Adam had told Marie that his wife’s name was Lumma. But Marie suddenly realized what he meant and looked upstairs with him. “Adam, do you mean…”
Marie nervously swallowed a mouthful of saliva. “The Lumma, who is here in our house right now, is your wife?”
