Lumma considered this guess to be highly likely and immediately made a decision. “Judy, I have something to ask you.”

Judy replied, “Lumma, you don’t have to be so polite. Just tell me what it is.”

Lumma said, “From now on, please don’t mention anything about Lucas’ parents to anyone else.”

Judy reassured Lumma, saying, “Lumma, don’t worry. Not everyone deserves to know about Lucas’ situation.”

Lumma spoke seriously, “You told me today, and I request that you keep it confidential. Don’t tell him about this.”

Judy didn’t understand and asked, “Why?”

Lumma explained, “When you shared these things with me, did you hope I would treat him better because of his parents?”

Confused, Judy asked, “Isn’t it wrong for me to tell you about his difficult childhood? I just wanted you to understand and treat him better in the future.”

Lumma gently rubbed Judy’s head and said, “Judy, your intention is not wrong, but have you considered that what Lucas might need is not sympathy from others?”

Judy inquired, “Then what does he need?”

Lumma smiled and replied, “Is it possible he needs a partner to walk alongside him?”

After careful consideration, Judy realized that Adam had never mentioned his parents’ situation to anyone, including her, over the years. Adam had kept the irresponsible parents a secret.

As soon as she sat down, Adam also returned. He didn’t mention the phone call he had just taken and resumed rolling the dumpling wrappers. He asked, “What were you discussing earlier?”

Judy vigorously shook her head and replied, “We discuss nothing.”

Adam saw through it but didn’t confront them.

The three of them continued to work together, and before long, they had finished making all dumplings.

Lumma boiled a pot of water and added the dumplings once it burned. After the dumplings were cooked, Lumma served a bowl to Adam. “Mr. Hills, please taste the result of our hard work first.”
