Sonya had just hung up when someone added her on WhatsApp. She smiled wryly and accepted the request.
“Sister, don’t you believe me?”
Along with the message came a distraught emoji.
Sonya replied:
replied: Early
pregnancy is not suitable for strenuous exercise.
Invincible Lazy Cat: Oh, right, you’re
a gynecologist. Hu Gege told me. Sonya went to pour a glass of water. In the meantime, the other person sent several prenatal checkup reports.
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat: Sister, I’m not lying. I’m really
really pregnant. Sonya examined them. Reply: Fluid accumulation in the uterine cavity, possible uterine bleeding. Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat: What does that mean?
Sonya: Threatened abortion.
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat: I had the checkup at a small clinic. The doctor said it was nothing to worry about.
Sonya: Have you had any abdominal pain or bleeding lately?
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat: No bleeding, but my stomach’s been hurting. I thought it was from eating cold food.
Sonya: I asked if your abdomen hurt, not your stomach.
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat: Doctor, I can’t tell the difference.
Sonya: It’s been two weeks since your last checkup. I suggest you get a follow–up, at a reputable hospital.
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat: Doctor, I’m so scared. This is my first pregnancy, I have no experience.
Sonya: Usually, it’s nothing to worry about. Don’t worry.
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat sent a crying emoji. Reply: Doctor, you’re so kind.
Sonya’s lips twitched. She took a few sips of water.
Invincible Invincible Lazy Cat realized something: Oops, Sister, when did we change the subject?
Sonya: Pregnant women need rest. Get some sleep.
She exited the chat.
Julian Jennings returned home to a dark house. He got a glass of water in the kitchen and gulped it down. Before, no matter how late, Sonya would come downstairs if he was home, asking if he’d eaten, if he was tired, if he needed hot water.
He might not be hungry, but he liked seeing her busy in the kitchen. Sometimes he’d hug her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, saying, “I’m so tired.”
She’d turn around,
around, hug him, kiss his forehead, and say, “You worked hard.”
Now, he was hungry and tired, but all he had was a glass of water.

Chapter 5 Prenatal Chargy Thon
The empty house felt cold. He went upstairs.
The master bedroom light was on, the door ajar. He checked the time eleven–thirty. Seraphina was usually asleep by now. Was she waiting for him?
He hurried to the door and heard her on the phone.
“You really got a divorce?”
Julian froze.
“Your wife finally let you go. That’s great! Now we can finally be together. I can divorce Julian Jennings immediately. We can be a family–me, you, and the baby.”
Julian’s hand clenched. Seraphina had promised to end things with Liam. Was this her idea of keeping her promise?
Seraphina said something that made her angry.
“What do you mean, you can’t get a divorce? Clean break? Compensation? How much? Ten
million?!”
Julian sat in his study. He hadn’t drunk that much, but felt intoxicated, disoriented. He craved hangover soup – Sonya’s hangover soup always had that strong herbal taste. He’d hated it then, but now he desperately wanted it.
The study door opened. Seraphina, in pajamas, flicked on the lights. Seeing him, she gasped, then a look of guilt crossed her face.
“You… when did you get back?”
The light was too bright. He shielded his eyes.“Just now.”
“Why aren’t you in the bedroom?”
“I didn’t want to wake you.”
Seraphina smiled.“I was waiting for you.”
“Oh?”
Seraphina sensed his mood was off, but she was anxious,
“Are you hungry?”
“A little.”
“I’ll make you something. Instant noodles?”
“Okay.”
she ignored it.
Seraphina was surprised he agreed. She was slightly annoyed but went downstairs anyway.
She returned with bowl of noodles
a
not cooked, but soaked in hot water.
“Eat it while it’s hot,” she said, handing him chopsticks.
Julian stirred the uncooked noodles. He ate a bite under her urging. They were hard and tasteless
she’d forgotten the seasoning.
“Um… I’ll learn to cook,” Seraphina mumbled.
Julian nodded.“Okay.”
“Actually… I want to invest in a project.”
