“Maliah, have you forgotten? Your dad and I had a bet. You lost, and now you have to pay up. That pearl necklace belongs to me!” 

Maliah was stunned. “That’s it? Valerie, you’re really something. Coming all the way here just for a necklace? Is your family so poor that you need to come begging for it?” 

“Of course. When dealing with people like you, I have to come in person. What if you ran off before I got here?

Maliah’s face turned pale with anger. “It’s just a necklace. What’s so special about it? Just wait!” 

She turned and went upstairs to retrieve the pearl necklace, throwing it at Valerie.

She crossed her arms, clearly annoyed. Valerie picked up the necklace and glanced at it, finding it increasingly familiar. 

She was sure she had seen this necklace before, but couldn’t remember where. She decided to take it home and investigate further.
